You are making the same mistake that many people make when they don’t understand the difference between hardness and toughness.
Example: Diamonds are the hardest natural substance we know. Which means they are very scratch resistant. Another diamond can scratch them, but nothing else. But because of the atomic structure of diamonds, it does make them hard, but that doesn’t mean they’re tough. Because the atoms line up in a specific way, if you hit them hard in one specific direction, they break quite easily. Which allowed people for centuries to cut them with a hammer and a chisel. You just had to know which direction to strick from.
The iPhone screen is as hard as sapphire. Which is 9 on the Mohs scale. Diamonds are 10 on the scale, or about 1500 times harder on a logarithmic scale. But even at 9, sapphire is very hard and difficult to scrath. Only synthetic moissanite at 9.5 and diamonds can scratch them.
But that says nothing about how tough the screen is. And obviously, struck in the right way can shatter it. But you could have the iPhone in your pocket with a set of keys, and they won’t scratch its screen. Synthetic sapphire is used in watch movements becuase it can be so small and so scratch resistant, but highly polished for a smooth bearing surface.
So there is no contradiction in Apple’s claims of hardness, even if they mistakenly said tough. Most people outside the gem industry don’t even know of this distinction between hardness and toughness. But when that Apple guy said that about the glass being like sapphire, he knew exactly what he was saying. |
