澳大利亚总理莫里森（Scott Morrison）提议，不改变澳大利亚现有的国庆日期，而是另外设立一个新的公共假期，来纪念原住民和他们的文化。
目前，澳大利亚的国庆日是1月26日（即英国第一舰队抵达悉尼湾的日期），并在这一天举行全国庆祝活动，然而，这一日期的设置却引发了争议。
总理拒绝了改变澳大利亚日的呼吁，而是建议与“澳大利亚人民讨论”，与原住民和托雷斯海峡岛民，以及各州民众探讨，设立一个新的公共假期来纪念原住民。

莫里森说：“有很多值得庆祝的事情……我认为我们可以庆祝这是世界上最古老的生活文化。”
莫里森虽然没有提名新的公众假期应该设在哪天，但他指出，澳大俩月首都领地（ACT）现在在5月28日有一个名叫“和解日”（Reconciliation Day）的公众假期，这是为了纪念1967年原住民公投的成功。
莫里森告诉第七台，“我们不需要用取消澳大利亚国庆日的方式，才能够真正认识到澳大利亚原住民的成就，认识到这是世界上最古老的生活文化；其实两者可以共存。”
“澳大利亚日是澳大利亚日…你不能假装你的历史不是你的历史，”他说，“那是国旗在Farm Cove升起的日子，是整个国家改变的那一天。”

来自西澳的原住民政府前主席怀亚特（Ken Wyatt）也认为，设立原住民纪念日的想法是“向前迈出的一大步”，并建议在7月的NAIDOC周期间举办这个活动。
他说：“之前我曾经向一位前总理提出这个主意，甚至建议，我们应该在NAIDOC周期间设立一个公共假期来庆祝。”
“NAIDOC周是属于澳大利亚全社会的。”

怀亚特认为，澳大利亚日应该保留在1月26日，因为这一天“不再是关于在这个国家定居的日子”。“这是关于我们作为一个国家，我们作为一个民族，以及一个正在密切合作建设这个国家的社会的熔炉。”他说。
此前，Byron Shire市府擅自将庆祝澳大利亚日的活动提前了一天，联邦政府剥夺了该市举行入籍仪式的权利。
去年1月26日，三个墨尔本市府决定停止未来的庆祝活动，也同样被剥夺了权利。
周一，在推特上评论Byron Shire议会的决定时，总理坚称1月26日仍然是反映国家现代历史的一天，并表示“放纵自我厌恶”不会使澳大利亚更强大。

Except Aboriginies and Torres Strait Islanders, nobody else has the original entitlement to this beautiful, vast land! So, EVERYBODY ELSE, GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM!

You all should know what the response should be to this statement and say it out loud!

Sorry, I can't give anybody credit any more, because I did lots impulsive shopping early this morning and spent almost all the FreeOz money in my bank!
