We're changing the way we treat some credit card transactions. The changes may affect you if you use your card to buy lotto tickets online, traveller's cheques, or other cash substitutes and equivalents.
What's changing?
From 25 November 2011, if you use your credit card to pay for things that are substitutes for cash or similar to cash - such as traveller’s cheques or casino chips - the transaction will be treated as a cash advance. This change will also apply to other types of gambling tokens and online lotto tickets.
What this means for you
If you use your card to buy a cash-equivalent item or substitute:
You'll need to pay a cash advance fee. For example, if you buy $1,000 worth of traveller's cheques using a personal card or personal liability business credit card, you'll be charged a fee of $15.00.
You'll be charged interest from the date of the transaction - cash advances don't have an interest-free period.
If you have a Commonwealth Awards credit card, you won’t earn any points for these types of transactions.
Three ways you could save on fees or interest for these types of transactions
1. Use a Debit MasterCard to buy things like traveller's cheques, casino tokens or online lotto tickets*.
2. Put cash on your credit card before making these types of transactions. While you'll still pay a cash advance fee, you won't be charged interest when you use your own money.
3. Use a Commonwealth Bank Travel Money Card* instead of traveller's cheques.

* Important information. Fees (including normal transaction fees) apply to Debit MasterCard and Travel Money Card. See terms and conditions for more information. From 25 November 2011, personal cards and personal liability business credit card transactions involving cash equivalent items or substitutes incur a cash advance fee of 1.50% up to a maximum of $150 per transaction (or a flat fee of $2.50 applies if your closing balance on the previous business day was in credit) and business liability business credit card and corporate card transactions involving cash equivalent items or substitutes incur a cash advance fee of $1.25. |
