Minister discusses Australian visa delays on national radio programme
Australian Immigration Minister Senator Chris Evans admitted a delay in Australian visas in an interview by presenter Peter Mares on ABC radio's The National Interest programme last Friday.
During the 15 minute interview Senator Evan’s admitted that there were now approximately 30,000 onshore and 105,000 offshore Australian skilled visa applications that were delayed as a result of the processing priority changes in September, although the Minister described the situation as   "it's not a delay in processing, it's a prioritising".
Applicants within Australia can expect to wait until at least the end of 2011 before their cases are processed; migrants applying from overseas could wait until at least the end of 2012.
"They're not on hold. What people do is they apply for permanent migration to Australia, and they're assessed, and we determine, based on the needs of Australia and our priorities, who gains permanent migration.
"We operate the scheme in support of the national interest so people may be facing longer waits in some occupations but others are getting quicker treatment if they're in occupations which are necessary for the growth of our economy," Senator Evans said.

Skilled Australian immigration needed to combat shortfall of 1.4m workers: research
New research has found that Australia faces a potential skills shortfall equivalent to 1.4 million workers by 2025 unless workforce participation increases.
To combat the shortfall the Workplace Futures report, prepared by the Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry, recommends raising the retirement age and boosting Australian immigration numbers with skilled migrants.
Australia is expected to see strong population growth, figures based on the continuation of high birth and net migration rates, but the paper warns the ageing population will mean a decline in workforce growth which will exacerbate labour shortages.
Skills shortages already exist in many industries in Australia, and skilled workers in occupations like nursing and IT are highly sought after by the Government and often given visa processing priority.
"The prominence of demographic change and skill shortages has recently been overtaken by the economic downturn of the last 12 months," the paper says.
"With unemployment increasing over that period, it would be easy to assume we no longer have a labour or skills shortage problem. However, skills shortages still exist in many industries, and the reality of Australia's ageing workforce means we face a structural deficit of workers over the next 15 years."

Australian immigration department petitioned by frustrated visa applicants
Frustrated by the sudden and unexpected move by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) to change visa processing policies many visa applicants have set up an online petition to protest the “extremely unfair practice”.
On September 23, the Australia immigration department announced a new list of processing priorities for the General Skilled Migration program affected both unallocated applications and Australia visa applications already allocated to case officers and in the process of being finalised.
The new visa processing priorities were announced suddenly, unexpectedly and were  made effective immediately.
Frank Claassen's, publisher of the petition, said: “We feel the implementation of these changes to applications already in the process of being finalized to be an extremely unfair practice and respectfully ask the department to reconsider this decision. We ask that DIAC apply fair practice and not penalize applications already in the process of being finalized.”
It is a call that many immigration specialists and government commentators have considered unlikely to be headed given current economic pressures.
However, the soon to be announced Migration Occupations in Demand Lists or MODL review is expected to make extensive changes to the Australia immigration system and could provide some applicants with a new pathway for migration.

Western Australia wages rise in strong Australian economy
New figures show the average weekly wage in Western Australia has grown 7 per cent last year to a seasonally adjusted $1,306.30.
The increase in wages has shown resilience in the Australian economy despite the global economic downturn.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics said recently that Western Australia's average weekly ordinary time earnings had risen from $1,221.90 in August last year to $1,306.30 in August this year, higher than the national average.
The state is experiencing high growth, particularly in the mining industry, and the Government has been encouraging skilled workers to emigrate to Australia to fill labour shortages.
If skilled workers have an occupation listed on the Critical Skills List they will see their Australia Visa application given priority processing.
The average wage for a female working in Western Australia rose 9.3 per cent from $982.80 in August last year to $1,074.60. Wages for males working in Western Australia grew six per cent from $1,340.80 to $1.422.20.
Nationally, the average weekly wage in Australia is now $1,200.60, or $62,431 per annum, after rising by 5.2 per cent in the year to August.
The quarterly seasonally-adjusted pace of average weekly ordinary time earnings rose 0.9 per cent in the three months to August.

Australian economy defies expectations as 24,500 new jobs are added in October
Australian statistics released recently has shown on balance positive news for the Australian economy, with the country performing better than expected and in the top three countries in the world.
Australia was expected to lose 10,000 jobs in October but the Australian economy actually managed to add 24,500, neutralising the impact of the slightly higher unemployment rate across the country.
Australia's current unemployment rate is 5.8 per cent, up from 5.7 per cent, but the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reported that Australia's unemployment rate has stabilised and will not reach the peak of 6.75 per cent forecast in this month's mid-year budget review instead touching just 6.3 per cent next year before turning down.
The result show the Australian economy is performing better than any Western country, other than Norway and Switzerland, with unemployment in Britain predicted to peak at 10 per cent.
and detailed employment figures have been release on average wages in states.
Western Australia is the best paid state with an average annual wage of $67,900, followed by New South Wales with an average wage of $63,325, Queensland with $61,500, and Victoria $60,800.

The Migration Institute of Australia (MIA) has written to the Australian Minister for Immigration and Citizenship expressing their concerns about the priority processing of General Skilled Migration applications.
Despite the call for a refund of visa costs to those who face a wait of up to three years before their Australia visa will be processed the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Senator Evans has dismissed the idea.
The Minister said Australia Immigration would continue taking applications, although the entire system including the Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL) was under review.
In the submission to the Minister the Institute stated that the new visa processing regime creates numerous serious problems including damage to Australia’s reputation, additional costs related to the wait to the Australia visa application, and the difficulty for employment for applicants on bridging visas.
The MIA said there was a potential risk to Australia’s reputation with thousands of people having paid Australia visa application charges, with the reasonable expectation that the applications would be finalised within published service standard times, waiting indefinite lengths of time for a decision on their applications.
The MIA has suggested that the Department should refund fees for applicants who now wish to withdraw their application,  and that it is particularly important to give priority processing exemptions to those applications which were about to be finalised just before the changes were announced.
