To align the Nurses Board of South Australia’s (nbsa) English Language Proficiency
Requirements with ANMC’s National Standards for the Assessment of
Internationally Qualified Nurses and Midwives the Board:
• endorsed the definition of an international student to be a student who is not
born and educated at primary and secondary level in Australia or New
Zealand and is enrolled in an nbsa approved course leading to registration or
enrolment

[/size]

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of South Australia (nmbSA) considers under certain circumstances, applications from students who are non-native speakers of English for waiver of the requirement to produce one of the two nmbSA recognised English language proficiency tests, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Academic Test or Occupational English Test (OET).

The student is required to provide the following documentary evidence when making their application to nmbSA for a waiver.

Waiver 1

Applies to students commencing nursing and midwifery education programs from 1st January 2009.

The evidence required includes the following:

Successful completion of a nmbSA recognised nursing or midwifery program at degree level; with a minimum of four full-time semesters over 2 years continuous study in that program on campus; at an on-shore Australian tertiary institution; within two years of the date of the application; and a copy of the English Language test prior to commencement of program that demonstrates an overall IELTS test score of 6.0 with a minimum of 6 in each of the four sub-bands.

Applies to students who commenced their nursing and midwifery education programs prior to 31st December 2008.

The evidence required includes the following:

An applicant form overseas, who has successfully completed a course of not less than four semesters (two years full-time study) within the last two years through an Australian University on-shore in Australia and who has provided the appropriate award as evidence, may not be required to undertake an English Language Proficiency Test.

Waiver 2
