THE Bank of Queensland is still chasing a mystery computer bug that has hobbled its internet banking service for three days.

The bank conceded that a software glitch had left its online services congested and unable to operate at full capacity during peak periods, leaving some customers without access to internet banking for hours.

Bank of Queensland group executive and chief information officer Iain Blacklaw said the bank understood what was causing the congestion but was still trying to determine the reason for the software's errant behaviour.

"Until we actually understand what it is that's causing the congestion I can't actually tell what the answer is," Mr Blacklaw said.

The bank said that the problem could have been triggered by recent routine upgrades to its system.

The bank's technicians are currently working overtime to correct the problem and Mr Blacklaw said that they hoped to resolve the problem within the next two days.

"We're working on it tonight and we think we'll have it done over the weekend," Mr Blacklaw said.

Until the problem is solved customers, would be shut out of the service temporarily for 20 minutes at a time during peak periods to allow staff to deal with congestion problems created by the glitch, Mr Blacklaw said.

Mr Blacklaw stressed that the banks internet customers were still receiving normal service in 80 per cent of cases.

"There's a big difference between a system being unavailable and a system being available for 80 per cent of the traffic even if that last 20 per cent of the service have a degraded quality of service," Mr Blacklaw said.

Bank of Queensland corporate affairs and customer relations group manager Paul Turner apologised to customers and asked them for patience while the problem was resolved.
