Melbourne's spate of gangland killings continued in bizarre style today with the fatal shooting of a suspected underworld figure in a Carlton restaurant. <br>
<br>
The victim, believed to be Andrew "Benji" Veniamin, had gone to the restaurant soon after attending a Melbourne court case involving another suspected underworld killer, Victor Brincat. <br>
<br>
Veniamin had sat in the public gallery of the Melbourne Magistrates Court with close companion Carl Williams, also a gangland murder suspect, and the pair had left the court building together. <br>
<br>
Police said the drama began when Veniamin argued with a group of men dining at the La Porcella restaurant at 2.45pm (AEDT). <br>
<br>
Detective Inspector Andy Allen, the head of the police task force investigating more than 20 underworld murders in Melbourne since 1998, said a man who has featured in their inquiries was in custody. <br>
<br>
"There was an argument of some description, some type of altercation, between two males and as the result of that, one male is deceased in the restaurant," said Det Insp Allen. <br>
<br>
Veniamin is believed to have wrestled briefly with the man who shot him in the ground floor dining area of the crowded restaurant, at the corner of busy Rathdowne and Faraday Streets. <br>
<br>
Witnesses said diners ran from the restaurant after the shooting, which took place in the same precinct once haunted by the late Alphonse Gangitano, a standover man whose murder in 1998 marked the beginning of Melbourne's underworld war. <br>
<br>
Police were tonight calling for witnesses to the slaying of Veniamin, in his early 30s, who himself was a suspect in several killings. <br>
<br>
The murder took a further twist with the appearance at the scene of Williams, still wearing the same clothes he had on in court earlier in the day. <br>
<br>
Williams hovered at the back of the pack of onlookers and media outside the restaurant, but ran off when approached. <br>
<br>
With reporters in pursuit he stopped a motorist in the street, jumped into the passenger seat and ordered the man to "drive". <br>
<br>
He then got out of the car at a nearby service station and locked himself in a toilet to avoid the media. <br>
<br>
A friend later picked him up. <br>
<br>
The heavily-tattooed Veniamin was regarded as Williams' closest companion and was on hand to greet him when he was released on bail last year after being charged with threatening to kill a police officer and the officer's partner. <br>
<br>
Williams, who is also facing drug charges over an amphetamine manufacturing operation, was shot in the stomach several years ago, supposedly by gangland figure Mark Moran. <br>
<br>
Moran was shot dead in June, 2000. Williams is a suspect in the killing. <br>
<br>
Moran was also the brother of Jason Moran, one of Melbourne's most feared underworld figures, who was shot dead along with an associate in June last year. <br>
<br>
A major suspect in that murder is Brincat, who appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court today in a hearing instigated by police seeking his DNA. <br>
<br>
Police were interviewing the man apprehended near the restaurant tonight. <br>
