Industry groups say while pent-up demand for housing and commercial properties continues to build, confidence to take on such investments remains low.

Aside from pockets of demand associated with mining investment, the construction sector otherwise remains in the doldrums.

“(This) should be a prominent concern for policy makers – the lack of a large and sustainable recovery in residential construction at a time when the domestic economy sorely needs such as outcome,” Housing Industry Association (HIA) chief economist Harley Dale said in a statement.

This was the 36th month the index has been below the critical 50-point mark that separates contraction in the sector from expansion.

Ai Group’s director of public policy Peter Burn said while successive interest rate cuts have been welcome for the industry, so far they appear to have only steadied the decline in building activity.
