AUSTRALIA Day plans for thousands of families may be thrown into disarray as unions threaten to close parks and disrupt fireworks shows.

Unions yesterday declared that the national holiday would be a "day of action" as part of their bitter wages row with the State Government, the Herald Sun reported.

Environment Minister Ryan Smith accused unions of hijacking the national day.

The row comes as Australians urge their compatriots to fly the flag with pride despite claims the national symbol is a sign of race hate.

The Australian Workers' Union this week notified Parks Victoria of its Australia Day plans, which could disrupt fireworks shows in the city, Geelong, Rye and Mornington.

Site access could be an issue on the Yarra banks, while the other shows could be affected because they use Parks Victoria boats.

Picnics planned for many major parks could also be off, if staff refuse to open the gates to Parks Victoria reserves across the state.

This includes Wilsons Promontory, which could be blockaded.

The Herald Sun believes Parks Victoria is prepared to call in police at the Prom in the event of a prolonged blockade.

There will be a 24-hour ban on park gates and stoppages from 7-11pm for staff rostered to help with firework displays.

Other affected parks include Werribee Park, Cardinia Reservoir, the You Yangs, Buchan Caves and Organ Pipes National Park.

Unionists have been directed to disable automated gates to prevent access.

AWU state secretary Cesar Melhem said any anger should be directed at the State Government.

"Unfortunately, it could be disruptive," he said.

"I expect the public will support our members."

The AWU had refrained from action over Christmas-New Year to minimise disruption to the public.

"Our members are fed up with the Government," Mr Melhem said.

"We need to put maximum pressure on the Government."

AWU members, along with the Community and Public Sector Union and the Australian Services Union, are seeking a pay increase above the 2.5 per cent offered by the Government.

Mr Smith said: "Australia Day is supposed to be a day of celebration, not an event to be hijacked as part of industrial action."
