Police believe a man whose body was found near a national park south-west of Melbourne was of Asian descent and aged in his 20s or 30s.

The body was found at Toynes Road near the You Yangs Regional Park in Little River this morning.

''A female was walking her dog at about 6.15am this morning and discovered the body,'' Victoria Police spokeswoman Constable Kate Lawson said.

Homicide squad detectives are at the scene and have blocked off Toynes Road. Parks Victoria has closed walking tracks near the scene.

Constable Lawson said there were no signs of violence at this stage, but detectives had so far been unable to determine the cause of death.

A post-mortem examination had been booked in for this afternoon, Constable Lawson said.

Police have yet to remove the body from the scene and are awaiting crime scene officers.

More to come

Violence prompts action on cameras

Cameron Houston
February 27, 2008

THE CBD will get 29 new closed-circuit cameras in response to a sharp rise in alcohol-fuelled assaults that threaten Melbourne's reputation as one of the world's most liveable cities.

The decision by Melbourne City Council to fund the $1.1 million expansion helped to break an impasse with the State Government, after Premier John Brumby rejected several requests to finance the project last year.

But Cr Peter Clarke said the council had been shamed into action after a tsunami of media attention on late-night violence in the city.

"With the media coverage last weekend we finally managed to get the right outcome for Victorians," he said.

The beefed-up security measure will include three new cameras along Queen Street, which has been identified by police as the city's most dangerous late-night precinct.

Several cameras will also be installed along Southbank Promenade, City Road and Alexandra Avenue, after a surge in the number of assaults on the south side of the Yarra River.

Other areas to receive the cameras include the Docklands, Spencer Street, Exhibition Street and the western end of Flinders Street.

While council was prepared to foot the initial cost of installing the cameras, Cr Clarke called on the State Government to contribute to continuing costs of about $1.4 million a year.

Rope-strangle scare for taxi driver

Matthew Burgess
February 27, 2008 - 1:16PM

A taxi driver says he is lucky to be alive after he was attacked and robbed by three men, including one who tried to strangle him with a piece of rope, in an area north-west of Melbourne last night.

Police say the three men booked a taxi and were collected from the intersection of Ross Watt Road and Swinburne Street in Gisborne about 7pm.

They directed the driver to a remote location in Grammar Road, Macedon. Police said the taxi driver, a 22-year-old from Melton West, stopped the taxi in Grammar Road to speak to the men, who had become abusive.

''They took me to this uncertain ways, which I (have) never been to and finally try to be aggressive with me and put some racial taunts on me,'' the driver, Gurprit Singh, told radio 3AW today.

''Finally when I stopped the car and refused the fare, they put a very thin rope around my neck and start punching me (to) my face and asked me (for) the money.''

The attack happened about 7.20pm. Mr Singh contacted police after the three men fled with the money.

He said before the attack, he noticed the men were putting gloves on. But he said the taxi did not have a security camera because it was thought not necessary in country taxis.

''I am lucky to be alive. Actually, I don't know if I wouldn't give them the money what they would do to me,'' Mr Singh told radio 3AW.

Police believe the three men ran to a waiting white sedan, which was driven by a fourth person and had followed the taxi to the remote area. It drove off towards Gisborne, along Forbes Road.

Police said Mr Singh was treated at the scene by ambulance officers and was later taken to Sunshine Hospital with neck pain.

The attackers are described as of Caucasian appearance and aged in their 20s with crew-cut hair. One was wearing a white T-shirt.
