The Best iPhone Apps of 2008from Gizmodo: Top by John Mahoney
Onlyfive months since Apple launched the App Store, and there are now overten thousand apps. Don't worry, we did the hard part, trying them outand picking the year's best:
We already selected our 20 essential iPhone appsnot too long ago—November 14, to be exact. That's recent enough tostill be fresh, but to those 20, we're adding 10 more, several of whichhave debuted between then and now. As a package, they're 30 apps everyiPhone owner should take a close look at. They're what we use everyday, and many of them are free.
The complete selection of our previous 20 essentials plus the 10 new apps can be viewed in our special Bestmodo Phone App directory. If you'd like, you can peruse all of our first 20 here on one page, and also, see the new additions to the list separately here:
EasyWriter:It seems simple—you can type URLs in landscape mode with its larger, more luxuriously spaced keyboard. Why not emails? EasyWriter solved it.Free; $2.99 for Pro edition

Facebook:For Facebookers (um, everyone, right?) it's essential—a beautifullydesigned, uber-functional implementation that's always with you. Free

EverNote:Already a popular web service and found on other devices, Evernote doessomething that every location-aware cameraphone should be able to do:quickly take and store geotagged photos so you can remember stuff. Free

Google Mobile: Google Mobile was a solid app (but not particularly essential)—and then came voice search. Free

RjDj:A totally unique music application that processes sound from yourenvironment and replays it according to a set program, creating atrippy, always-evolving soundscape. Free to try; $2.99 expanded version

VLC Remote: One of the first apps we loved was the iTunes Remote—now, the Swiss army knife of media players VLC has one of its very own. Free ad-supported simple version; $1.99 for more controls and no ads

Wikipedia Mobile: Finally, the definitive Wikipedia reader for the iPhone. $2.99

Night Camera:Thanks to its accelerometer, your iPhone knows when it's being jiggled.Night Camera, simply and ingeniously, uses this data to make yourlow-light picture clearer. $0.99

Tweetie:Twitter apps: there are a lot of 'em. Tweetie, though, is the closestyou'll get to the Twitter desktop experience, and therefore our bestof. $2.99

Recorder:While not the sexiest apps, a good solid voice recorder can beincredibly handy—especially if you are a handsome FBI investigator inthe town of Twin Peaks. $0.99

Thereare loads of games in the App Store for the iPhone/iPod Touch, but ifyou want to save money and space, which are the true essentials? Hereare our 10 must-haves.
While there are enough good games in theApp Store to fill up multiple pages on your iPhone or iPod Touch, youdon't need that many, nor do you need to spend that much money. If youfocus on filling certain genres with single games and not doubling upon multiples, you can make yourself the ultimate "games page" of apps. Here's the list.
Touchgrind:This skateboarding game was designed from the ground up for themulti-touch iPhone platform, and it shows. The completely uniquecontrol method of using your fingers as legs on a skateboardimmediately makes sense and is totally addicting. As you get better, the new skateboards that are unlocked with high scores continually feeljust within your grasp. $4.99
Galcon:Galcon is a space-based strategy game that delivers super-short games, which is perfect for the iPhone. Rather than getting dragged into gamesyou won't finish, Galcon lets you play a bunch of one or two minutegames. You can refine your strategy with each game, and every time youlose it's just too easy to try again. Lite: Free; Pro: $4.99
Fieldrunners:Many call this the best game in the App Store, and it's tough to arguewith them. A tower defense game with a super-high degree of polish, this is the definition of addicting. Basically, you want to set upweapons to stop soldiers for storming your towers. You earn more cashfor more weapons for every guy you stop, and you lose health for everyguy who gets through. And then you can't. Stop. Playing it. $4.99
Line Rider iRide:You've probably played Line Rider on the internet in some form oranother: you draw a bunch of lines, then a little man on a sled getstossed down your makeshift track. The controls are simple and workgreat on a touchscreen, and you can play in short bursts, saving yourmaps for later. It's intuitive enough that there's virtually nolearning curve, but you can spend countless hours working on yourmasterpiece of sledding physics. $2.99
Uno:You know Uno, you love Uno. But here's a version that involves no peskyshuffling. If you're more of a poker fan you probably went for TexasHold 'Em, which is cool, but if you ask me, Uno is a much more fun cardgame. After all, what fun is poker when you're gambling with pretendmoney? $5.99
Rolando:This is a wonderful, cartoonish platformer that uses simple controlsthat are easy to learn but are used in increasingly complicated andchallenging ways as the game progresses. You control a series of littleballs—Rolandos—by tilting your iPhone and swiping up to jump. But youcan control many of them at once, and there are also obstacles andswitches you can manipulate. It's got a high degree of polish and willsuck you in from the first level. $9.99
Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D:This is our favorite racing game, despite not being fully sold on theaccelerometer controls of iPhone racing games. But because of that, youreally only need one, and this should be it. Great graphics, goodstability and plenty of variety add up to make this the essentialiPhone racing game. $5.99
SimCity:This port of SimCity 3000 is stunning. This is no gimped version ofSimCity, dumbed down for a touchscreen. It's the full game, completewith advisers and all the building types you can handle, with intuitivetouchscreen controls. Finally, you can build the epic metropolis ofyour dreams whenever you sit down and have a few minutes to kill. $9.99
Touch Hockey: FS5:Air Hockey on the iPhone is just like regular air hockey, minus thehigh probability of getting one of your fingers smashed with the puck.Simply put your finger on the mallet and try to score some goals. It'salso fun to play with two people, with each person holding an end ofthe iPhone. And hey, no quarters required. Lite: Free; Pro: $1.99
Trism:This is essentially a modified version of Bejeweled, and if you knowthat game then you know why you'd want it on your iPhone. It's aclassic puzzle game, one that makes the transition to the touchscreenbeautifully. You're trying to get three pieces of the same colortogether to make them disappear, and depending on how you're holdingyour iPhone, the resulting tumble of pieces will happen in a differentdirection. It adds a new level of strategy to the game while retainingwhat made the original so awesome. $2.99
[A Bonus 11th game, From Brian: I'd like to add Motion X Poker Questto the list for its amazing use of the accelerometer and in gamephysics used to roll the dice, as well as beautiful graphics and soundsand addicting game play. ]

TheiPhone has risen to prominence on Flickr, rivaling most SLRs inpopularity. These statistics from Yahoo cover the last 12 months.
(Credit: Yahoo)

The iPhone isthe mobile device of choice these days for doing most things that needa network. So it shouldn't be a surprise that the phone has carved outa prominent place on Yahoo's photo-sharing site, Flickr.
The Flickr Camera Finder,Yahoo's statistical counter of camera use among its members, shows thatsince the arrival of the iPhone 3G model earlier this year, the phonehas vaulted not only over all other camera phones, trouncing the NokiaN95 in second place, but also almost all ordinary cameras.
That's a notable accomplishment. I've been watching the Flickr Camera Finder for two years, and that's the first time I recall a camera phone placing so highly. The top ranks have been dominated by SLRs, the camera of choice formany of Flickr's heaviest users.
Withthe debut of the 3G model, Apple's iPhone surged to a commanding leadamong camera phones used at Flickr. These statistics from Yahoo coverthe last 12 months.
(Credit: Yahoo)
Right now the iPhone is in a virtual tie with Canon's Rebel XT andNikon's D80, two SLRs whose popularity is waning with the arrival ofnewer models from the dominant makers of such cameras. Only Canon'snewer Rebel XTi outranks the iPhone.
Though the trajectory is clear, there are caveats. First,Flickr measures popularity on the basis of the number of users who'veuploaded a photo on a given day. In other words, the camera used by aperson who uploads one photo a day will fare better than one whouploads 100 pictures one day a month. Second, many camera phones don'tidentify themselves to Flickr, so their use isn't logged. Last, thesestatistics fluctuate daily, and who knows what kind of anomalousbehavior is going on during the holidays.
The total number of photos uploaded from the Rebel XTi is about51 million, compared with 5.8 million for the iPhone. However, thereare nearly 3,000 people uploading daily from their iPhone compared withabout 6,500 for the XTi.
My guess is the iPhone's better-than-average network abilitiesare responsible for the prominence. For the same reason, iPhone usersalso use Google Maps and other online services more than most mobiledevice users. The BlackBerry is good at e-mail, but the Internet hasother attractions.
What's more interesting is extrapolating from the trend.Certainly the iPhone's image quality doesn't hold a candle to even oldpoint-and-shoots, much less new SLRs, but the phone taps straight intothe social features of Flickr--theability to photographically share with friends and family what's goingon in your life, for example. There are innumerable expertphotographers at Flickr, but it looks like the yet larger herd ofordinary snapshooters are going to leave them in the dust onceliberated with the ability to post pictures at will.
I sent my iPhone photos to Flickr using the site's upload-by-e-mail service (see Yahoo's instructions),but there are several iPhone applications that will do it for you ifyou prefer. Apple's photo e-mailing software scales photos to 640x480,but I don't mind, given feeble image quality and the unlikelihood thatthese shots will ever make their way beyond a computer screen.

ASP.NET
