Reporting from Dongguan, China -- Growing up in the Chinese countryside with only an elementary school education, Yang Yanjun had never heard of Christmas until she landed a job painting pink-cheeked cherubs to decorate trees.
But Christmas proved to be a miraculous holiday that would utterly transform her life. Over a decade, she worked in factories producing ornaments and toys that foreign children were told came from Santa's workshops. She earned up to $200 a month, unimaginable riches that allowed her to build a house for her family back home.
Now the Christmas miracle has gone bust.
The financial meltdown that has thrown so many American families into crisis might be even worse on this side of the world. The precipitous drop in consumer demand has translated into a wave of factory closings that have spit millions of Chinese workers out into the ranks of the unemployed. The fallout is most obvious in Dongguan, a southern Chinese city that, despite its palm trees and sultry climate, may be the real-life North Pole.
Until recently, Dongguan had 3,800 toy factories, producing a staggering 30% of the world's toys. The Dongguan Trade Assn. estimates that 1,800 of them have closed or will close in the coming months.
The 37-year-old Yang lost her job making hairpieces for Barbie dolls in October, when Smart Union Toys abruptly closed down. A major supplier to Mattel Inc. and Disney Co. with 7,000 workers, it had been one of the largest employers in town. Now there are only a few security guards who watch over a courtyard strewn with empty toy boxes and soggy plush dolls, a scene looking like the morning after a Christmas party gone awry.
Most of the workers, migrants like Yang who came from central China, have gone home. Houses are empty, shops shuttered. The neighborhood looks like a ghost town. But Yang has stayed on looking for work, desperate for money to support her 13-year-old son and elderly parents who live near the city of Chongqing.
Every morning and every afternoon she goes out, walking past the padlocked gates hoping to find a factory still in business and perhaps hiring.
Notices are taped to some of the gates, but with too many people chasing too few jobs, employers are picky. The notices specify young workers with high school educations and computer skills. Some require that men be at least 5 feet 9 and women at least 5 feet 1. Height is one of a number of obsessions in the workplace here.
"No, nothing for somebody like me," says Yang, a ruddy-faced woman whose toothy smile stretches wide across her face, even as she peers at another notice saying job applicants must be younger than 30.

After the toy factory closed, she got a job at a shoe factory. But she was fired after five days when the boss realized she needed to wear eyeglasses. Then a job at a handbag factory lasted only 12 days before it closed because of a lack of orders.

"In the past, you didn't need skills to get hired. The factories just needed workers and they would take anybody," Yang said.

China has not released figures on job losses, but the influential magazine Caijing quoted an unnamed Labor Ministry official saying that 10 million migrant workers had lost jobs this year through November. Nearly 5 million of those workers had already returned to their hometowns.

Dongguan's residents, most of whom came from elsewhere to reap the rewards of the manufacturing boom, liken the situation to a wave that has spread around the globe.

"First, you had banking problems in the United States, then factories closed, and now we have lost our jobs. It is an economic tsunami that has now hit us," said Han Guoren, 24, a laid-off toy factory worker who was selling Santa Claus hats (salvaged, he said, from a closed factory) in downtown Dongguan.

The entire Pearl River Delta, the manufacturing hub that extends from Hong Kong to Shenzhen and Guangzhou, is suffering. But toys are particularly vulnerable. Even before the downturn, the industry was reeling from product recalls. Toys are almost entirely an export industry, with 90% of the product shipped overseas. Profit margins are tight and consumers fickle.

"Nobody is doing well at the moment, but toys are really hurting," said Christopher Devereux, a British business consultant whose company, China Savvy, is in Guangzhou. He says that many of the toy manufacturers, faced with rising costs and mounting losses, decided to pull out.

"This is a city of not only migrant workers, but migrant entrepreneurs," Devereux said. "They literally disappear into the night."

Even larger factories went poof. Smart Union employees had been working overtime to fill Christmas orders when they learned that the top managers had fled to Hong Kong. The municipal government had to fork out more than $2 million to pay the wages they were owed.

"Nobody could find the bosses," Yang said.
Other migrant workers were not so lucky. When their factories went bust, they were left without their final pay and without lodging, if they had been boarding in a company dormitory. In some cases, they lacked the money to get home.

"Let us help you go home," read giant red billboards around Dongguan erected by a private company that is helping migrants raise train fare.
If anything, industry insiders predict that next year will be worse. The orders for this Christmas season came in months before the impending financial debacle was obvious.
"Toys are a happiness business," said Leung Chung Ming, managing director of Lung Cheong International Holdings, a company with a large factory in Dongguan that specializes in remote-control toys. "If there is no good news, if the market situation is tough, people don't want to buy a $99 toy for their child."

The Chinese government has promised to take measures to spur domestic consumer spending, with the hope that it will help pick up the slack. But Chinese consumers are unlikely to bail out the beleaguered toy industry.
Although many Chinese have come to love Christmas, decorating trees and windows, piping the ubiquitous carols into elevators and stores, one thing they don't do is shop. The big consumer holiday here is the lunar New Year -- and parents buy clothing and shoes for their children, not toys.
"All these toys we make are for the foreign children," said 40-year-old Long Sunjun, who runs a small shop near the closed Smart Union factory. She says that even the children of the toy factory workers seldom were given toys other than squirt guns or balls.
"Chinese kids can make their own toys. Besides, they should be studying, not playing with toys."

By Malcolm Moore at East China Normal University, Minhang
Last Updated: 4:23PM GMT 26 Dec 2008

Forty years after millions of students were sent to the provinces during the Cultural Revolution, the economic downturn has forced students to head for rural areas once again.

A record 5.6 million students will graduate this year, according to government figures, and jobs are scarce. They will have to compete with the 700,000 graduates from 2007 who remain jobless. Major international companies are now receiving tens of thousands of desperate applications for every available post.

In response, the Chinese government has turned the clock back to embrace Chairman Mao's "Shang Shan Xia Xiang", or "Climb the Mountains and Go down to the Villages" policy from 1968.

Almost 17 million teens were sent out of China's cities in the belief that they would be transformed by living among ideologically pure peasants. Many members of China's current leadership spent spells in the countryside, and President Hu Jintao helped build a dam on the Yellow River for a year.

The scheme continued until 1980, but was criticised as a means of expelling "class enemies", or anyone who dared to dissent, from the centres of Chinese power.

Next year, however, the government "will recruit over 30,000 college graduates to go to rural and western regions to teach," said the ministry of Education, adding that it had rapidly expanded the scheme in order to cope with the rising levels of unemployment.

Not only is the jobs market stuttering, but the flow of students is greater than ever before. Between 1999 and 2006, the number of graduates quintupled, flooding the labour market and depressing wages.

"Graduates who choose to work in remote and rural areas for a required period will be exempt from paying college tuition fees and the government will pay off their student loans," promised the ministry.

The People's Liberation Army is also hiring. Students who enlist have been promised the chance to study in army universities and of "quick promotions".

Gao Hui, a 20-year-old postgraduate political sciences student at East China Normal University on the outskirts of Shanghai said that she had "always wanted to be a teacher; it was either teaching or joining the army".

Miss Gao, and three other students had to come top of their class to qualify for a chance to be sent for a year to Wuding, a town of around 300,000 people in Yunnan, a province that borders Vietnam, Laos and Burma in China's south west.

"We had to take a written exam and then had face-to-face interviews to get this post," said Miss Gao, adding that they had beaten dozens of other students to the position because of their ideological conviction.

After the four students from East China University have spent a year teaching 16 and 17-year-olds in a middle school, they will return to Shanghai to resume their postgraduate studies.

Their only fear is not harsh living conditions, but whether their limited teaching experience will be a hindrance, they chime. They will each have their costs paid, and will earn a stipend of 600 rmb (£60) a month, more than twice the average wage of a peasant, but a fraction of what they could be paid in Shanghai.

"We are very excited. Peasants are simple-minded, honest and have integrity," said Wu Chenhao, a 20-year-old maths student. "As a Shanghainese, I need to broaden my vision." She added: "Among the other students there are many who are trying to go to the countryside in order to put off entering the jobs market, because of the pressures of employment.

But I think after a year with the peasants they will be different people.

They cannot help but change."

In our jobs, we may have occasions to communicate with people in other countries or from other cultures.Whether we are buying, selling, consulting, or simply trying to obtain informatoin, we will need to get across ideas to an audience we are not used to dealing with. Just as we need to understand the characteristics of our audience when we communicate with others from our own country, we need to understand something about the culture, business customs, and communication styles of foreign audiences.

Here, then, are some tips to assist you in your intercultural communications.

    1、Be Clear And Simple.

Whether communicating orally or in writting, avoid long, complex sentences, highly technical language, jargon, and colloquialisms. Don't be condescending, but do use simpler words when they are available.

2、Don't Assume That Someone You Hear Speaking English Will Understand You.

If you talk too fast, slur your words or have an accent, ever a foreigner who seems to speak perfect English will have a hard time following you. An added problem is that many English-speaking foreigners are too polite to let you know they haven't understood.

3、Learn The business Customs And Terminology Of Those You Will Be Communicating With.

For exaple, we use the metric system of measurement, the US uses a different system of measurement. And many coutries use the day/month/year/ system for dating as opposed to the US system of month/day/year. A meeting arranged in one of these countries on 7.5.89 is scheduled for May, not July.

4、Use Written Messsages Whenever Possible.

You read English more easily than you understand spoken English. If you communicate by phone, follow up with a confirmation in writting to guard against miscommunication.

5、Don't Be In A Hurry To Get To The Point.

Europeans, Africans, and Arabs in particular, are put off by the straight-to-the -point style of North American business communication. They prefer a more round-about approach.

6、Don't Ask Questions That Require A Yes Or No Answer.

Whereas North Americans tend to say yes when they mean yes and no when they mean no, that's simple not the case in most other cultures. In Asian countries, for example, it is considered impolite to say no, so Asians may answer affirmatively if only to mean "yes, I heard you." Europeans, on the other hand, may initially react negtively to any question, but they actually mean "maybe" or "it depends." In many countries, the answer you get is what the person thinks you want to hear.

    7、Earn About The Country's Body Language.

Gestures have various meanings in different places. In Yugoslavia turning the head from side to side means yes; in Japan, looking someone in the eye is considered judgmental or hostile; and in Ghana, thumbs up is a rude gestures. To avoid giving offense, keep your hands quiet.

8、control Your Style Of Expression.

The North American style of expressing emotions is considered impulsive and wild by Asians but restrained and cold by Latin Americans. You need to be aware of how your habits of emotional expression will affect peoplei n a particular culture.

9、Don't Interrupt Periods Of Silence.

Many foreigners are offended by the North American penchant for jumping in to fill any gaps in a conversation. Speakers in many cultures enjoy periods of silence and use them to gather their thoughts. Be patient. Allow the person to formulate what he or she wants to say, and try not to be "helpful" by putting words into the other person's mouth.

Thirty Years After Deng: The Man Who Changed China
By Michael Elliott Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008

When students ask me who was the most memorable character I've met, I never know how to reply. Was it Nelson Mandela, with a steel-trap political sense sneaking out from under the surface charm and grace? Or Margaret Thatcher in her pomp, allying clarity of thought to an utter conviction in the rightness of her judgment? Or Bill Clinton in 1991, fizzing with ideas and intellectual curiosity, before we knew how indiscipline would diminish him? Or any one of countless others?
It's an impossible choice. But when it comes to the leaders of modern times whom I never met, but would dearly have loved to, there's no contest. I'd give anything to have sat down with a tiny — barely 5 feet tall — bridge-playing chain smoker who used the spittoon liberally and had a weakness for croissants. And I'd ask him: Did you have any idea what you were doing?
It is exactly 30 years since the conclusion of the Third Plenum of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the meeting that consolidated Deng Xiaoping's position as China's leader and laid the groundwork for a generation of economic reform. In 1978, Deng was the great survivor. He had been a party member for nearly 60 years, and had been purged more often than a top model's digestive tract, only to claw his way back to the leadership. China was desperate. The horrors of the Cultural Revolution were a fresh memory. As Premier Wen Jiabao said in a speech to a World Economic Forum conference in Tianjin this year, in 1978 "the country was in a backward state ... with the economy on the brink of collapse."
Deng was no student of the dismal science. He once said, "I am a layman in the field of economics. I proposed China's economic policy of opening to the outside world, but as for the details or specifics of how to implement it, I know very little indeed." But he knew enough to let others lead. The reforms that Deng blessed started in the countryside, where farmers were allowed to sell surplus produce and, in time, were allowed to farm their own land on long leases rather than as part of a commune. "Township and village enterprises" — small firms, many of which grew rapidly in size — sprang up. Prices were freed. As the success of reform became evident in the countryside, it was gradually extended to the cities. Deng endorsed the creation of Special Economic Zones, islands of capitalism in a communist society. (The most famous SEZ, Shenzhen, just north of Hong Kong, knows whom to thank for its prosperity; Deng's statue graces a square in the city.) So China started that long run of supercharged economic growth that has made it the workshop of the world. (See pictures of China hosting the Beijing Olympics.)
And — more to the point — Deng's reforms improved the life chances of more people, faster, than has ever been done before in the history of humankind. To be sure, you can still find poverty in China. Traveling deep in rural Guizhou province this fall, I saw damp villages where the homes were mean huts and families eked a living from rocky hillsides. But everyone had shoes, and nobody looked malnourished.
It is by now an axiom that a generation of breakneck economic growth has brought its own problems. Modern China is not charming. Many of its towns and cities are desperately ugly and shoddily built, workers have few rights, and environmental disasters abound. As global demand contracts, China's export-led, manufacturing-heavy economy is now facing a sharp downturn. Moreover, the accepted narrative of China — that Deng opened up and modernized an old-fashioned and hermetic economy — needs much qualification. Recent historical research has stressed that China was modernizing and internationalizing fast, if imperfectly, in the half-century between the late Qing dynasty and the outbreak of war with Japan in 1937. And for all his twinkling eyes, Deng was tough. Together with a group of party elders, it was he who gave the go-ahead for the army to crush the demonstrations in Tiananmen Square in 1989, snuffing out the hope that real political reform would accompany changes in the economy.
Yet for all the caveats, there is something stupendous about Deng's achievement. (This magazine certainly has long thought so; he is one of only four non-Americans to have twice been named TIME's Person of the Year.) A friend of mine in Hong Kong describes what is happening in China today like this: Think of a quarter of the world's population — with all its good and bad, beauty and ugliness — rejoining the mainstream of human development after centuries when it stood to the side.
That is the great story of our time. It is our story, everyone's story — not just China's. And it is Deng's legacy.

Journalist Ge Yang joined the Chinese Communist forces during the Chinese Civil War. She worked as a writer and editor for Chinese news organs before and after the Communists came to power in 1949, but she was eventually denounced as counterrevolutionary, and, like millions of her comrades, she was exiled to a work camp in the countryside. This interview, which was conducted for COLD WAR in February 1997, has been translated from Mandarin.
On becoming a communist:
I'd actually joined the struggle against Japan in 1937 as part of the Nationalist forces, but then I found that Kuomintang was too corrupt and was not democratic. The Nationalists had a one-party system, and I thought that the Communists would be better. Also, the Communist propaganda at that time was very critical of the Nationalists: it said that they were very, very bad; only the Communist Party was good: it was democratic, it was egalitarian, and it promised food for all. So the ideal of communism gradually entered my soul. I joined the Communist Party.
At that time I was a news worker, working for the New China News Agency, and all the people I interviewed felt that the Kuomintang had to collapse. At that time the money which the Kuomintang used was already valueless, and the [money] which the Communist Party used was very valuable. ... The Kuomintang was in a state of total collapse, and so all the people I interviewed felt that the most hope was with the Communist Party. ... Also the communists had promised to redistribute the land and get rid of the landlords. This was the way that it managed to unite all the poor peasants. In addition to this, it promised that the workers would control everything; this was, of course, their slogan, and it gave a lot of hope to the working class. Most people in the cities believed that socialism would no longer allow people to starve. Everybody was very happy.
On the evolution of Chinese communism:
Most of the uneducated people in society had great hopes for the Communist Party and gave it their full-hearted support; but those who felt positive towards the Kuomintang and the Americans, and opposed the Communist Party, had to keep quiet about this. So on the surface everybody seemed to be positive about the Communist Party. The Communist Party knew this, and so in 1951 it launched a great campaign to repress counter-revolutionaries across the country. All the Kuomintang officers who were arrested were killed. Of course the ordinary soldiers weren't killed -- it depended on their ranks -- but an awful lot of people were killed. ...
At that time we thought that both China and Russia had one ideal, and that was to achieve communism. I believed in the same ideal; so we thought that Sino-Soviet relations was a good thing. But after I visited the Soviet Union in 1953, my mind began to change. On the one hand I began seeing problems with the Communist Party. ... Our magazine established two columns: one was called "Little Stories from Life"; the other was "Little Critique." The "Little Stories from Life" was based on letters, which came from all over the country, reflecting people's experiences and confidence in the Communist Party. The "Little Critique" consisted of criticisms of bad aspects of society: bureaucracy, corruption, waste, etc. At first, there were many, many letters to the "Little Stories from Life" column; they came from all over the country, and there were so many that they filled up several bags; we couldn't even read them all. But there were hardly any letters to the "Critique" column. We couldn't find any to fill the column; we had to get somebody to specially write for it. But then after two or three years, there was a complete reversal of this situation: there were plenty of critical articles, criticizing bureaucracy, waste, corruption -- criticizing the Communist Party. But we couldn't find any of the positive stories. This had a big impact on me: I began to see what the real situation was. We had to set up a special department to deal with the critical letters -- there were so many of them.
The other aspect was the time that I spent in the Soviet Union. I saw a lot of things: I had to take the train through Russia, Poland, Germany, to the Women's Conference in Denmark. ... I saw how in East Germany the streets were very dead and quiet; there were only state shops, no private shops. The same was the case in Moscow: you had to queue for everything, just to buy some moldy plums. On returning to Beijing I found that the situation in Beijing was much better than Moscow. At that time Beijing was just beginning to nationalize its private shops, and in the Dong An market in Beijing there were still in fact many private traders, and there was plenty of produce available. After coming back I told my editorial department to go off and take lots of pictures of the fresh produce in Chinese markets. Of course, after the Great Leap Forward the situation in China became the same as in Russia, or even worse.
On Mao and the Great Leap Forward:
Firstly, I should make clear that Mao wanted to become the leader of the world revolutionary movement. During the time of the attack from Soviet revisionism, Communist parties throughout the world were split into two factions, and one faction was in favor of China誷 position. They all came to visit China, and they had to see Chairman Mao; if they didn't see Mao maybe they'd die when they went back to their own countries. This made Mao very happy, because it gave him the position of world leader. Secondly, Mao wouldn't let anybody else stand on the same level as him. What he said was the most important. Everybody else bolstered him up -- he was a Chinese Emperor; he had great ambitions, like during the Great Leap Forward and the Three Red Flags movement.
The Great Leap Forward was actually a failure because so many people made false claims. Scientists pretended to go along with this, and made ridiculous claims for the amount of grain produced for each [parcel] of land. Children would be made to stand atop the grain which was produced, to show how much there was. The falsehoods of the Great Leap Forward were absolutely unbelievable; anybody who did not speak in falsehoods was expelled from their job, or demoted -- they were not allowed to be active officials. So from the time of the Great Leap Forward, all Chinese people learned to tell lies. Mao liked to hear lies: he thought that if people said good things they were correct; if they said bad things they were incorrect.
On being denounced and exiled to the countryside:
I was branded a Rightist at the end of 1957, beginning of 1958. I was branded a Rightist because I felt that the Communist Party was not democratic. I criticized party members by saying that normally they were like madmen, but when it was necessary for them to really speak their minds, they were like dead men. That was my crime. I thought that the Communist Party was undemocratic, and that it was right for the students at Beijing University to criticize the Party.
After being branded a Rightist I was sent off for labor in the countryside. Then I became quite clear what the Communist Party was really about. Life for the peasants was very tough then -- they'd been through the Great Leap Forward. I also had a very tough time, and I realized that for the sake of so-called communism, the Party was prepared to speak complete lies. ...
The work was harder than I could bear, and I often became ill. I became very malnourished; we only had coarse grain cakes to eat -- there was no rice or anything like that. I went down with hepatitis; many people died, but nobody really knew how many people died. All we knew was that everything outside was getting more and more expensive, and that the rations of grain were becoming less and less. We had to measure very carefully how much grain was allocated to each family. The Communist Party blamed all these hardships on the Soviet Union, and said that it was all the result of revisionism. But people could see things clearly. It was the Communist Party that made people poorer and poorer.
At that time there was more criticism of [Soviet] revisionism than of American imperialism, though both sides were attacked. Mao believed that class struggle was the most important thing. This was the only way he had to control people; he wanted to stir up conflict among all people in society. At that time, after being branded a Rightist, I no longer had any rights. At that time, a Rightist was the same as a counter-revolutionary. A Rightist had to right to speak or to publish or to write. But in fact our hearts were very much at one with those of the ordinary people. We no longer had much hope in the Communist Party.
On the Cultural Revolution:
We thought it would only last a short time, but it went on for ten years and caused great hardship. I was again sent off to inner Mongolia for another eight more years. During the Cultural Revolution we were branded as cow-demons and snake spirits, and were sent off to very harsh places for labor. So people like me spent 20 more years branded as counter-revolutionaries. So by this time we had lost faith in the Communist Party, and couldn't understand why there were all these movements, and why Lin Biao came to the fore as Mao's successor. It all seemed like a reversal of Marxism. The Communist Party and Mao had completely lost their mandate among Chinese people because of the Cultural Revolution. ...
The Cultural Revolution was mainly an internal matter. People could be branded Rightist, counter-revolutionaries, for all sorts of different things. It was rather like the scene described in the famous Chinese classic novel "Dream of the Red Chambers." People would commit suicide in all sorts of different ways.

    1. Can you pass me the sunblock?

    2. You might get sunburned if you stay in strong sunlight for a long time.
You can use certain kinds of vegetables and fruits.

    3. You have a nice suntan.
You have a nice suntan.
You have a nice tan skin. I love to hit the beach and grab a tan.
I have light/medium/dark tan skin.
    除了tan，表示晒日光浴还可以用 catch some rays / sun 来表示，比如 Let's catch some rays.
