Teen tries to ignite chemicals at police station

A 14-year-old boy attempted to ignite a concoction of chemicals at a police station on the NSW north coast this afternoon, police say.

The teenager allegedly walked into Port Macquarie Police Station at about 1.20pm and attempted to light a bottle containing a mixture of chemicals.

Officers immediately arrested the boy, set up an exclusion zone around the station, and called in NSW police's hazardous chemicals team. No police personnel were injured and the area was declared safe at about 3pm.

The type of chemicals involved in the incident is not yet known, but the teenager has been charged with possessing a dangerous thing with intent to injure, and intimidating police.

The 14-year-old was denied bail and is currently undergoing a medical assessment.

He will appear in Port Macquarie Children's Court tomorrow morning.
