On the free plan, GPT-5 use is limited by a daily message cap.
Once you hit that cap, ChatGPT will switch you to a lighter model (GPT-4o mini) until your limit resets the next day.
OpenAI doesn’t publish the exact free-tier limit publicly because it can change based on demand, but from observation it’s usually around 30–50 messages to GPT-5 per day.
