There is a Chinese saying which carries the meaning that "It is easier to reshape a mountain or a river than a person's character." How true is that!
Recently I shared my study notes which were taken while I was staying with an Australian family in a website. When I published my post in the website, I also created a link to my website for English learning. To my surprise, I got many criticisms from some people. I don't mind people criticise me as long as they got the points and in a nice way. But some criticisms are quite nasty. Two main things they criticise are: One is my notes are useless for English learners as it only contains words or phrases with occasional typos or imperfect Chinese translation; the other is I use the website as platform to advertise my website. My response for the first point is: these words or phrase are from my life experience in Australia. The reason I want to share my notes is to give people a taste of what words we use in Australia. I am sharing rather than teaching. I hope people can point out my mistakes as well. For the advertising part, I told them millions of times that I advertise my website because I believe it is a good tool for people to learn English. It is a not for profit website.
Now I have to draw a conclusion that it is wasting time to try to convert these people. No matter how hard I try to convince them, the feedback is always negative. Internet is supposed to be an open space for people to share and learn. But some people just use it as a tool to tease other people for fun. Maybe I have to accept the reality that a lot of extreme people do exist in cyber space. They are just like bugs keep annoying you and don't let you alone. It is really up to us to decide how to cope with them and their opinions. If you believe you are doing the right thing, you should keep doing it. Don't let these people's judgements interfere what you are doing. We cannot change a person, but we can choose the way we deal with people.
