瓦格纳本人对“前奏曲与爱之死”的介绍，摘自 Ernest Newman 的 The Wagner Operas：
当瓦格纳最早将前奏曲与爱之死这两个部分连在一起作为乐队版演出的时候，他把前半部分叫作“前奏曲与爱之死”，后半部分叫作“净化”。
Prelude-
a progression from "the first timidest lament of inappeasable longing, the tenderest shudder, to the most terrible outpouring of an avowal of hopeless love", the music "traversing all phases of the vain struggle against the inner ardour, until this, sinking back powerless upon itself, seems to be extinguished in death."
Verklaerung-
"Yet what Fate divided in life now springs into transfigured life in death: the gates of union are thrown open.
