Citizenship Test Launched on Australian Citizenship Day

The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Kevin Andrews today launched Australia’s new Citizenship Test and resource book Becoming an Australian Citizen.
“The Citizenship Test provides the means of ensuring that prospective citizens understand and appreciate Australian values, culture and history,” Mr Andrews said.
Mr Andrews said prospective citizens would have access to a free resource book which includes all the information required to sit the computer-based test.
An information campaign to support the introduction of the Citizenship Test will also begin today.
The first tests will be sat from 1 October 2007
Australian Citizenship Day is being celebrated all around Australia today, with hundreds of people becoming citizens at ceremonies being held across Australia.
The Minister also announced a series of initiatives to provide extra support for citizenship applicants to meet the requirements of the Citizenship Test.
Funding of $13.9 million over four years will be provided to assist new migrants prepare for the Citizenship Test.
A Citizenship Test preparation webpage will be developed to help applicants understand the full range of assistance available, including links to Australian Government-funded English language programmes
The Let’s Participate course will also be updated to reflect the new material contained in the Citizenship Test resource book.
“Before becoming a citizen it is reasonable to expect that a person will understand the core values that have helped to create a society that is stable yet dynamic, cohesive yet diverse,” Mr Andrews said.

A citizenship test resource book, Becoming an Australian Citizen, has been developed to help people prepare for the citizenship test. All test questions will be based on the content of this book. Everything people need to know to pass the test is contained in this book. Becoming an Australian Citizen gives migrants to Australia the information they need to better understand what it means to be an Australian and covers:
Australia’s values
Australian history, culture and geography
Australia’s national symbols and emblems
Australia’s parliamentary system of government
the responsibilities and privileges of being an Australian citizen.

The book will later become available in audio format, which will also be available for download from my department’s website or by telephoning the department. This will help people with low literacy skills to study the material in Becoming an Australian Citizen.
