I cannot believe it. Only tens of thousands of visitors crashed nz government website at one time.
The website I develop can handle 200,000 web requests per second for the file size 2 bytes using one ibm x3650 m3 2 xeon e5620 24 virtual cpu with 48gb ram. It drop to 20,000 rps for the file size 1,000 bytes at concurrent connection 1,000. I guess my website is ok to handle one million concurrent connection. But I have not tested that. The reason for the testing not been done is that I do not have the money to buy a 40gb switch and network card and servers.
I think that nz immigration really should outsource and pay me big money to design a proper website.
