Chapter 2 - At Kursk railway station, Sergei Ivanovich sees a group of volunteers heading for war in Serbia, among them is Vronsky who has aged and whose face is full of suffering; and he also meets Stephan there who tells him that he has received his desired post.
Chapter 3 - Katavasov goes to the second class compartment to meet the volunteers.
Chapter 4 - Sergei Ivanovich talks with Vronsky's mother and learns of how Anna's death affects Vronsky.
Chapter 5 - Sergey Ivanovich talks with an angry and suffering Vronsky at the station.
Chapter 6 - Sergey Ivanovich arrives at Levin's home and finds a happy Kitty whose relationship with her baby forms such a contrast with the relationship between Anna and her daughter.
Chapter 7 - Kitty worries about clean bed linen for the guests and ponders over her unbeliever husband affectionately and wishes her son to grow up like the father.
Chapter 8 - Levin contemplates the matter of belief in religion and feels in painful discord with himself.
Chapter 9 - Levin's struggle to find out who he is and why he is here, and the tormenting untruth he has adopted.
Chapter 10 - Reason leads Levin to doubt, but he knows what is necessary for him to do.
Chapter 11 - All peasants show extraordinary effort of self-sacrifice in their labour in this most pressing time; and the story of a muzhik living for his soul by the truth, by God's way, lights up Levin's heart with joy.
Chapter 12 - Levin feels something new in his soul; he realizes that the answer to his question about the meaning of life cannot come from thought, which is incommensurable with the question. The answer is given by life itself.
Chapter 13 - Dolly chides her children for failing to imagine the full scope, the immensity, of what they have enjoyed when they think up a little thing of their own, and Levin sees a parellel in this with adults whose philosophical thinking blinds them to the obvious. He is happy that he finds his faith.
