LAB setup is always the essential part of learning any new technologies. my lab hardware is not super powerful since I have the budget limitation. so I tried my best to get the below hardware with reasonable price and specs. Hopefully this will help some of you who wants to build the similar PC as a lab.
Purpose: Build a lab to run as many VMs as possible.
Challenge:
1. Disk IOPS running many VMs
2. Memory usage running many VMs
2. Need to find the best hardware around my budget 1000 AUD
Outcome:
So here’s my final decision
http://www.rickygao.com/wp-content/uploads/images/My-home-lab-specs_10128/image_thumb.png
Conclusion:
1. CPU is never a problem since it’s a lab, nothing fancy running on the background, even when the SCCM is doing patching, physical CPU usage is still under 50%
http://www.rickygao.com/wp-content/uploads/images/My-home-lab-specs_10128/image_thumb_3.png
2. Disk IOPS is not a major problem in my lab so far, each physical hard disk can running two VMs without any speed slow down since nothing fancy processing on the background. If we have enough memory, maybe I will consider the super fast SSD solution in my lab http://www.rickygao.com/wp-content/uploads/images/My-home-lab-specs_10128/wlEmoticon-smile.png
3. Now memory is a big problem which is always not enough, the result of 32G memory means I have to turn some VMs off, which is why I highly recommend to go further buy a motherboard support 64G memory, like Intel X79 series
http://www.rickygao.com/wp-content/uploads/images/My-home-lab-specs_10128/image_thumb_4.png
As you can see above, as a small lab, some of the basic VMs must be running all the time to let my infrastructure keep working.
So not much memory left for me to play with, that’s why I’m still regretting didn’t go with 64G motherboard, like Intel X79

LZ System Center

Tomtao+USB
