Dec 20 2012 Tourists lost in Blue Mountains rescued

The bushwalkers aged in their twenties lost their way on Wednesday evening but were able to activate an emergency beacon they were carrying.

A helicopter search failed to spot the men during the night but they were eventually found by a ground team of police and paramedics at around 6am on Thursday.

The officers from the Blue Mountains Rescue Squad and Specialty Casual Access Team paramedics drove to Medlow Gap before trekking through 5 kilometres of rugged bushland and scaling steep mountains.

The trio were suffering heat exhaustion and dehydration but were otherwise uninjured from their overnight ordeal.

An ambulance helicopter winched the men to safety.

Police have praised the preparedness of the tourists, and say the incident should serve as a reminder about the hazards of summer bushwalking.

"They notified us of their trip intention ... they may have been lost but their preparation may well have saved their lives," Sergeant Ian Colless from the Blue Mountains Rescue Squad said.
