A 20-year-old P-plate driver has been jailed for three months after evading police by driving at speeds of up to 250 km/h on the Hume Highway.

was pursued by police in New South Wales and Victoria while driving from Sydney to Melbourne in August last year in his Subaru WRX STI sedan.

Pickering was stopped by NSW police but sped off again.

Victorian police also tried to stop him but broke off the pursuit when his speed exceeded 200 km/h. He was finally located by the Victorian air wing in a dead-end street in Craigieburn in outer Melbourne.

Pickering, of Malvern, yesterday pleaded guilty to six charges, including reckless conduct endangering life, driving without P plates displayed and exceeding the speed limit.

His lawyer, Stan Waites, told Broadmeadows Magistrates Court that Pickering was developmentally delayed and that his parents had gone through great anguish to make him recognise he had a problem.

Magistrate Robert Kumar sentenced Pickering to nine months' jail, with six months suspended. He was disqualified from driving for five years and fined $2000.

The case has again focused attention on the speeds modern cars can achieve.

The RACV was not in favour of limiting the top speeds of cars, public policy manager Brian Negus said last night.

"Trucks are limited to 110 km/h but we do not think that is practical for cars," he said.

Mr Negus said evidence showed most accidents on highways happened in the speed range between 80 and 100 km/h and were not predominantly high-speed crashes.

"Governors could limit the acceleration of a car and could make it more difficult to get out of trouble," he said.

Drivers needed to have some flexibility in car speed and acceleration, he said.

"They need to have the ability to increase speed for safety's sake, sometimes above the speed limit, although we would never recommend that as a regular practice."

The Subaru Impreza WRX STI is one of the fastest cars available on the market but the company has defended the model, which is used as the basis for a world rally championship contender.

"Subaru does not condone speeding on public roads," Subaru spokesman David Rowley said.

）
