Teen arrested over Ringwood station stabbing
NEWSCRIME
16 DEC 09 @ 11:54AM BY DAVE CROSSTHWAITE, MELINDA MARSHALL AND SHAUN CAMPBELL

Ringwood Station.
UPDATE 2.15pm: A TEENAGER has been arrested over a stabbing at Ringwood station last night.

Ringwood detective Sgt Dave Gover said police arrested the man at the station at 1.30pm and expected to charge him with intentionally causing serious injury.

Sgt Gover said the man, who has addresses in Boronia, Ferntree Gully and Bayswater, was in custody and was expected to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning for a remand hearing.

Police today said they would step up patrols at the station and local shopping centre after a 22-year-old man was stabbed on platform three about 9pm yesterday.

The 22-year-old is in a serious but stable condition in the Alfred Hospital after he was slashed across the chest with a small blade.

The alleged attack follows calls for security cameras at the station this week.

Maroondah Leader reported a group of youths had been intimidating staff and commuters at the station for a month.

Station staff said a group of about seven aggressive youths had been loitering at the station, hassling people for money, jumping tracks, holding carriage doors open and drinking.

Bayswater State Liberal MP Heidi Victoria said last night’s alleged incident demonstrated the need for live-feed cameras at the station.

“Obviously the more footage they had on this sort of thing probably the better and if there had been live footage cameras they might have even seen trouble brewing and police could have attended the scene,” Mrs Victoria said.

Maroondah acting Inspector Kevin Barrie said local and transit police would step up patrols at the station.

“The busier periods are later in the afternoon and evening so that’s when we’ll concentrate the increased patrols,” Insp Barrie said.

“We support the idea of cameras at the station and we believe that a number of crimes would be prevented if we had the cameras.

“As people become aware that the cameras are there they would moderate or adapt their behaviour in some way.’

Acting Insp Barrie said police would also increase patrols at Eastland.

Meanwhile, Maroondah area youth resource officers Sen-Constable Stuart Sorrell and Sen-Constable Julie Simpson have warned young people and their parents about the dangers of carrying knives.

Ringwood rail stab charges
NEWSCRIME
18 AUG 08 @ 11:19AM BY SHAUN CAMPBELL
TWO teenagers face assault charges after a man was stabbed in the stomach at Ringwood railway station.

And a third teen a 19-year-old Ringwood North man was remanded in custody last week after a policeman was slashed with a knife at Knox.

Police media Sen-Constable Adam West said a 23-year-old Lilydale man suffered a 25cm stomach wound in an incident at Ringwood station about 11.55pm on Saturday, August 9. Doncaster East resident Lyndon Benke said he heard the man calling for help and ran to his aid.

Mr Benke said the man’s T-shirt, pants and face were “covered in blood” from a “deep gash right across his stomach”.

He said he called an ambulance and applied pressure to the wound.

Ringwood paramedic Paul Rankin said officers arrived within five minutes.

Mr Rankin said paramedics gave the man oxygen, dressed the wound and fitted a neck brace before taking him to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition.

Sen-Constable West said an 18-year-old Heathmont man faced Ringwood Magistrates’ Court last Thursday charged with recklessly causing serious injury.

He said the man was remanded in custody and ordered to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on November 7.

A Mt Evelyn man, 19, was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on September 5.

Sen-Constable West said a policeman, 23, received a cut to the face during a struggle at Knox Ozone complex about 8.45pm on August 14. He said a Ringwood North man, 18, suffered a stab wound to the stomach and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital under police guard.

The man appeared at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with intentionally causing injury, conduct endangering life, assaulting police and possession of cannabis.

He was remanded in custody until November 7.

Green light for Ringwood social housing project
NEWSGOVERNMENT
02 OCT 09 @ 03:45AM BY MELINDA MARSHALL

Planning minister Justin Madden has given the go-ahead for a controversial social housing development at Ringwood
A CONTROVERSIAL high-rise development at Ringwood has become the first major social housing project approved in Victoria under the Federal Government’s stimulus plan.

The $24million development at 4-10 Larissa Ave was given the green light by Planning Minister Justin Madden today.

Eastern Metropolitan MP Shaun Leane said the 80-unit development would will be funded largely with Federal stimulus money.

The project has stirred controversy because it was fast-tracked for approval by the State Government, bypassing the Maroondah Council planning process and public consultation.

The building’s architects were sent back to the drawing board after Maroondah Council objected to the design, saying it was too tall and provided inadequate parking.

Mr Leane the plans included eight storeys above ground, and a semi-basement car park. He said it would include a mix of two and three-bedroom units.

About 20 per cent of future residents would be homeless or at risk of homelessness, half would be from the public housing waiting list, and at least a quarter would be on low incomes.
(20%居住者:无家可归或者在无家可归边缘者,50%居住着:政府组屋等待者,至少25%居住着:低收入者。)

Mr Leane said the building was in line with Ringwood Activity Centre policy and consistent with the guidelines for higher density residential development.

``There is presently a limited offer of social and affordable housing within the Ringwood area with only 3.9 per cent of the population living in social housing within a 1km radius of Larissa Ave,’’ Mr Leane said.

``The property is extremely well located and forms part of a precinct that is designated for mixed commercial and residential development.’’

He said the project would inject more than $24million into the local economy, creating 76 direct and 29 indirect construction jobs.

Conditions attached to the stimulus funding for social housing require at least 75 per cent of the projects to be completed by December next year.

About 3500 people signed a petition in September calling for public input on the project.
