yeah, I totally agree.
I used to be APS5 for ATO few years back... it was awesome.. Let me demonstrate you my typical day.
7.00am – Rock up to work. Nothing to do till 9am cus everyone else rocks up at various times.. Read newspaper, buy coffee, make toast in the kitchen, chill out.
9.30am – By now everyone's at work, so start prentending to work. Go around visiting workmates, and just basically chat around.
10.00am – Morning break. Suppose to be a 15min break, but nobody cares less. Manager takes half an hour himself, so who's to say we can't?
10.30am – Ok. Now, gotta do bit of work.
10.50am – Ok, that's enough for the day. Pretend to go to the loos, head out to the carpark and take a nap in the car.
11.30am – Come back from the mini-nap, and just start pretending to work. Open up Outlook, and just start chain emailing.
12.30pm – Now for the hard earned Lunch.
1.30pm – Back from lunch. Took 1 hour, but put down as 30min lunch in the Time Management System (aka TMS). Then, start pretending to work again.
2.00pm – Take afternoon break. Suppose to be 3pm, but because I'm leaving at 3pm, I can take one now. Suppose to be 15mins but I can take 30mins (cus everyone else takes 30mins as well).
2.30pm – Back from break, now start packing up. Can leave work now, but put down you have left at 3.00pm in TMS.
Well, there you go.. My typical day at ATO. Not only this, taking Mondays or Fridays off for a sickie is norm in the Publick Service. Working hard is frowned upon, cus it makes others look bad.
Now I got a Masters Accounting Degree and work at firm. But I really miss those days at ATO... it's like free money they are handing out..
I did a stint in the Federal PS years ago, and the above accurately describes my experience. Many people started at 7.30 and followed the above routine, I preferred to sleep in and start at 9.30, but stay (not work) till the end in order to build up flex and do private stuff whilst no one was around. Work also had a tendency to flow towards the workers, so anyone that was foolish enough to do more than the bare minimum was usually lumbered with the messiest cases.
When I was at Uni I also sat for the state public service exams to earn some money over the break and ended up spending 8 months in the State PS, which I found to be slack in many ways, but much more professionally run than the Federal PS.

Whirlpool Enthusiast I'm officially over working in the public service. It is killing my work ethic slowly and if I stay for another year i'm afraid it will kill my career. Seriously thinking of taking a slight pay cut to get out and into some challenging work.
It's been good whilst studying as I've been able to study lots whilst at work, but it really grinds me down having nothing to do and bieng able to do a weeks work in a day... |
