First home owners' grant extended

FIRST-time house hunters will have six more months to snap up the Federal Government's boost to the home owners' grant, in a plan to phase out the extra cash.
The First Home Owners' Boost, which doubled the bonus for existing homes to $14,000 and trebled the new home allowance to $21,000, will be extended in full until September 30.
From October the boost will be cut, with new-home buyers eligible for a $14,000 grant and existing home buyers getting $10,500.
The extension will end on December 31 and from next year just the original $7000 grant will remain for all first-home buyers.
The Rudd Government last night said the $539 million decision to extend the boost would create more opportunities for Australians to realise the dream of owning their own home and support "many thousands of jobs" in construction and housing.
"The extension of the First Home Owners' Boost will mean more jobs for plumbers, electricians, builders and other tradespeople all over the country as we battle the global recession," Treasurer Wayne Swan said.
The Government claims retail sales have climbed 4.5 per cent above where they were before the boost was unveiled as part of the Government's first stimulus package last October.
The Real Estate Institute of Queensland estimated the extra cash contributed to more than 13,000 first home purchases in Queensland during the five months to March.
Office of State Revenue figures for the period showed more than 12,000 grants were handed out for the purchase of existing homes and more than 1300 for new homes.
The housing and property sector has lobbied the Government to retain or even boost the grants.
Before the Budget the REIQ had urged the Government to continue the scheme.
The Housing Industry Association called for the boost for new homes to stay at $21,000, or even be increased, but for existing dwellings to be dropped back to $7000.
