澳大利亚政府移民部长埃文斯星期一（3月16日）宣布，2009-2010年度技术移民限额将减少14%。

埃文斯在接受澳大利亚广播电台采访时透露，2009-2010年度澳大利亚技术移民限额总数将由13.35万减至11.5万，另外技术移民的职业种类也将减少。

埃文斯解释说，受国际金融危机影响，澳大利亚经济情况出现变化，相应缩减移民限额是审慎的决定。

澳大利亚2月份失业率由4.8%跳跃至5.2%，同时政府预计7月份失业率将达5.5，2010年7月失业率将达7%。部分经济学家甚至预言失业率可能将高达10%。

埃文斯在接受电台采访时明确表示不希望更多移民来与澳大利亚人争夺有限的工作机会。

澳大利亚是移民国家，目前国内2100万人口中约四分之一出生在澳大利亚以外的国家和地区。

澳大利亚工商会对政府的决定表示保留，商会首席执行官安德森指出澳大利亚仍然缺乏技术人才，商会希望技术移民限额维持现行水平。

据透露，水管工、焊工、木匠等工作都将不再是澳大利亚吸收的技术移民种类，不过护士、医生、工程师以及电脑人才则不会受到影响。

由于中国等国家对矿产品的长期大量需求，澳大利亚经济此前连续17年持续增长。

澳大利亚的计划移民人数自1997年以来也逐年增长。据统计，澳大利亚自二战结束以来已经接受了近700万名外国移民。
