no proof. It is merely my opinion. If you don't know about cisco yet and your course not cover it, probably don't even bother.
Go DEEP into oracle probably serve you a better chance. "oracle DBA"還是很缺的(至少某間大電信工司目前如此).
Be "selective" when focus on university syllabus, they are not 100% prepare you for an IT job. If I were you , i would take some of my uni time to focus interpersonal skill and the rest time will focus on only aspects that coincide to my first IT job.
To broaden your chance to get first job (as to ANY jobs that can further develop you to better IT career), I would also make sure i know how *nix system work (NOT just knowing a couple of commands).
Perhaps, you could do a quick scan in "table of content" of Oracle, SUN solaris, CISCO (and developer stuff if you like) just to see what the industry oriented IT knowledge focus on. Then go back to scan through the rest of your uni syllabus and to mark out the difference. Bear in mind most certification only "serve BASIC knowledge" to do the daily IT work (well, at least for the maintenance side of IT work).
If you don't want to be jobless, you need to look at the market demand. Of course to be able to get good $$ for an IT job could be a different story.
For self learning coding project, you probably want to try join some open source project as I often heard there are many elite coder in the zone. "How to program java" those kind of book, don't really make you a java programmer. It is often not 'what' you can code but 'how' you do it.
***Last piece of advice:
"IF" you failed to get graduate job, you are facing competitors like new migrants with 0 Australian experience but extensive IT experience back home. Not to mention economic downturn just make competition much fiercer . Of course, your best bet is still graduate job but beware that some graduate jobs can still render you to be a Jack-of-all-trade type IT person. That is sth you don't want to be in IT field.
