DISABLED PARKING FINES TO BE TRIPLED 13/02/2006
DISABLED PARKING FINES TO BE TRIPLED
Rann Government will triple the fines imposed on people who illegally park in disabled car parking spaces, Transport Minister Patrick Conlon announced today.
"Selfish and inconsiderate people who take disabled car parks without a permit will be issued with a $210 fine, up from the old fine of $70," he said.
"It is a constant source of frustration and annoyance to drivers with disabled parking permits that others without permits park in these limited spaces.
"But clearly, for some people the message still isn’t getting through.
"Over the past year, the State Government has reviewed the Disabled Parking Permit scheme, in response to concerns raised by the general public that drivers, without a valid permit, were parking in spaces specifically reserved for disabled persons
"Life with a disability can be restricting enough, without having to put up with the added inconvenience of thoughtless drivers.
"We have tens of thousands of carers in our community who drive their family members and friends around, helping them to stay as independent as possible and remain involved in their communities."
"I hope people think again before they are tempted to just "sneak in" to a disabled parking spot.
"This is about showing some good manners on our roads, but it’s also about respecting the rights of other people."
A Disabled Parking Permit means a vehicle can be parked in disabled persons’ parking spaces, which are signposted and have the disabled symbol painted on the road surface.
Mr Conlon says that to qualify for a permit, a person’s medical practitioner must certify that their ability to use public transport is significantly impeded by a physical impairment, or that their speed of movement is severely restricted because of that impairment.
A Disabled Parking Permit also:
is valid if the vehicle is being used for the transportation of the disabled person, who is a holder of a permit; and
allows the vehicle to be parked for twice the period indicated on a parking sign, or the period indicated on the sign and a further 90 minutes, whichever is the longer.
