THE technology sector has built on February's strong job results, the best since fourth quarter of 2001, with a 4.6 per cent seasonally-adjusted rise in job advertisements last month.<br>

The post-holiday bounce-back in February saw a 29 per cent (seasonally adjusted) jump in IT&T roles, which has been followed up with an additional 452 jobs in March, according to the latest Olivier Internet Job Index.<br>

Jobs in the hi-tech industry fell by 6.1 per cent (unadjusted) for the same time last year.<br>
<br>
IT&T was the third best performer out of 21 sectors in March, based on growth in jobs, behind engineering and mining and "other or unclassified" roles, namely defence positions.<br>
<br>
The technology industry ranked fourth overall on the number of jobs advertised, which was 10,182, based on raw numbers.<br>

Olivier Recruitment Group director Robert Olivier said the tech job sector was up 75.6 per cent (seasonally adjusted) on a 12-month comparison.<br>
<br>
"This time last year we were advertising 5,800 jobs, so on that scale it is a far healthier market now," Mr Olivier said.<br>
<br>
Software development and engineering roles were up 9.4 per cent (unadjusted) in March, while networks, communications and security vacancies were 10.6 per cent (unadjusted) higher.<br>

Other significant growth by job category was in system administration and support, while instruction, training and technical writing roles leapt by 25 per cent (unadjusted).<br>

The only negative result was database development and administration, which dropped 3.2 per cent (unadjusted).<br>

The overall increase in March was 2.3 per cent seasonally adjusted. The overall graduate job advertisements were up 126 per cent on this time last year.<br>
<br>
IT&T graduate roles have had significant growth, with 66 jobs per week advertised in March, compared with 18 per week for the same period last year.<br>
<br>
"This comes at a time when people are not opting to go into IT after a tough couple of years," Mr Olivier said.<br>
<br>
He said employers would have to think harder about how they rewarded and retained their staff.<br>
<br>
"They (staff) are going to start to feel the market is right for them to begin to look around more," Mr Olivier said.<br>
<br>
While all the financial sectors suffered losses in job advertisements, building and construction rose 6.3 per cent, but the hospitality, travel and tourism sector fell 3.9 per cent.<br>
<br>
The Olivier Internet Job Index surveyed 118,922 positions vacant advertisements on commercial job sites in March and analysed them by state and industry.<br>
