AFP - A small explosive device was thrown at the Australian High Commission in Malaysia early Tuesday, a spokesman told AFP.

The bomb was thrown from a moving car before dawn.

It caused no injuries or damage to property after hitting the front fence of the high commission in central Kuala Lumpur and exploding on the street, the spokesman said.

"We had a minor incident involving a small explosive device being thrown from a car at ten to five this morning (0650 AEST)," he said.

"It was thrown at the front fence of the high commission. It exploded with a big bang but caused no damage to life or property."

The attack was witnessed by police and private security personnel guarding the embassy and the bomb squad and fire brigade were quickly on the scene, the spokesman said.

He declined to speculate on whether the bombing was a terrorist incident or the expression of some personal grudge against Australia.

"The matter is being investigated by police and as far as we are aware there are no leads at the moment."

The spokesman said security at the embassy was already tight in the wake of terrorist attacks around the world and "we will maintain our high level of vigilance".

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra confirmed a small device was thrown at the High Commission but caused no damage or injuries.

"The High Commission was closed at the time," the spokeswoman said.

"We welcome the very prompt and appropriate response by Malaysian authorities and police."
