GUN crime is heavily concentrated in a few areas of Sydney - the Fairfield area has recorded more than 400 incidents in the last six years, compared to just five in Hunters Hill.
A breakdown of official figures shows that gun crime has fallen across Sydney. Nevertheless, the director of the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, Don Weatherburn, said it was a concern that so much of it was occurring in only a few areas.
In the last six years, Fairfield has recorded more shootings of people and houses than anywhere else. The 80 instances of drive-by shootings is 30 more than in any other area of Sydney.
The most recent instance occurred this week when Hassan ''Sam'' Sayour, the nephew of Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim, was shot with two others during an altercation in Old Guildford.
Bankstown is second on the gun crime list. The CBD ranks third, and is the area with the most armed robberies.

Dr Weatherburn said it was likely much of the gun-related crime in these areas was being carried out by a ''small number of people who are causing a great deal of harm''.

It was a similar situation when gun crime peaked between 1995 and 2000.
Much of the problem during that period related to a group living in Telopea Street, Punchbowl. Between 1998 and 2000 the 500-metre street was linked to as many as four murders and 25 shootings.
At least five recent shootings have had links to the Ibrahim family and their associates.

The commander of the Firearms and Organised Crime Squad, Detective Superintendent Arthur Katsogiannis, said the concentration of shooting incidents in certain areas did not mean they were any more dangerous to live in than other parts of Sydney. This was because the events were targeted, aimed at others involved in organised crime, and not just members of the public.
Superintendent Katsogiannis said that NSW police had seized 7187 illegal firearms since 2007 and it was becoming more difficult for organised criminals to get their hands on guns.
That was small comfort for Essam Khedr. His home was struck by a stray bullet during the shooting in Old Guildford on Sunday night. It ended up lodged in a flyscreen door, only metres from where his wife and six young sons had been watching television. Mr Khedr has been searching for a new place to live. He wants to move far away from Fairfield.
