Once upon a time, it was long time ago, so as I felt, my newly found friends wanted to take me somewhere to taste that Northern country I just set foot on, which was not only the first foreign country and also first real winter for me. Before I completely understood what I agreed to, there I was, stood on the top of a snow-covered mountain with bunch of fully-loaded people: skis, ski poles, gloves, googols and hat, full on. We were about to started our skiing lesson for beginner. Daunted by vertical drop of the ski slope, I nervously looked at others and wished for a warm friendly human face for comforting, although in vain, we all pretty much bundled up from head to toe.
First, and for the most, our ski instructor taught us how to get up on skiing slope once you fell. One by one, we tried. “Excellent”, we all got appraisal from our instructor. I bet this was the only situation for me and anyone else to get applause for falling and standing up.
Second, we were taught how to stop. Again, we tried and all excellent remark.
Then, instructor said forming one line and following me. So we did and skied downhill. Just second passed, one person jumped out of the line, and bolted down to the bottom. Oh, I thought whoever-was was in wrong class. Soon after, patrol guy approached and talked to our instructor in private. Then, he said “Sorry”, he had to go to hospital, we could either go down by ourselves or wait for patrol to bring us back to ski resort lounge. Fresh out of China, I was quite money-conscious and quickly figured the ski lesson cost me more than my monthly salary in RMB back then. Unwilling to see my money gone wasted I decided stay on by myself.
Two days later, the chairperson of Chinese student union announced that a Chinese been hospitalized and we should visit him. Once we were there, he started talking about how he got concussion. He said a skiing accident two days ago at that “somewhere”. “Oh” I said, “you were that expert skier in my beginner ski class”. He gave me a most bitter smile I had ever seen, “no, not at all”, he just simply could not stop or slow, instead, whooshed down like a falling stone, somehow backward off-piste and knocked on a rock.
