Australian Government To Issue Tax System Review Sunday May 2
Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan said Friday the government will release and respond to the most comprehensive review of the country's tax system in over three decades on Sunday, May 2.
The review, conducted by Treasury Secretary Ken Henry, was completed in December but hasn't yet been made public.
It was originally announced in May 2008 during rosier economic times, and is likely to test the center-left Labor government's resolve for major tax reform, with lawmakers' appetite for lower taxes potentially curtailed by the financial crisis.
However, Swan said Friday the government hasn't been distracted from the long-term challenge of tax reform, despite the global recession.
"We're determined to build a tax system that's simpler, fairer and stronger and the independent tax review is a vital first step in that long-term plan for the future," he said.
The treasurer has previously said the potential magnitude of some of the reforms proposed in the review may mean the government needs to seek a fresh electoral mandate to make the tax changes, in a federal election due later this year.
Business groups are calling for the Australian government to cut the company tax rate by between five and 10 percentage points, from a current 30%.
There have also been media reports in recent times that the review recommends replacing current mining royalties of between 2% and 8% levied by state governments with a federal resource rental tax.
Resource industry participants have warned the government against any tinkering with the tax system that might make Australia a less attractive destination for mining investment.
