The Rural Fire Service said tonight an investigaion had found the training exercise was responsible for causing the blaze, which has burnt out more than 46,000 hectares and sparked fears of turning into a “mega-fire”.
“The investigation has concluded the fire started as a result of exploding ordinances on the range on Wednesday,” a RFS spokesman said tonight.
On Saturday, Defence said it had launched an investigation into whether the State Mine Fire was caused by a training exercise on army land at Marrangaroo.
The RFS later said there were no total fire bans in place on October 16 when the army started the fire.
NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell said it shouldn't be forgotten that the defence department had also provided a lot of firefighting assistance.
