Dreamers cast aside logic in rush for shot at $50m lottery bonanza

Of the millions of people who have a ticket in tonight's $50 million Oz Lotto draw, few are bothered by the minuscule chances of winning the jackpot. Emotion tends to override reason when it comes to dreams of a big win.

About 500,000 tickets are expected to be sold in NSW and the ACT today, with about the same amount sold in Victoria. By the time of the draw, about 2 million people across NSW, the ACT and Victoria will have tickets to Oz Lotto's second-biggest jackpot of the year.

All up, an estimated 1.5 million tickets will be sold across the country today; equating to about 187,500 tickets an hour. In total, 3.8 million tickets will be in the running for the top prize ahead of the 8.40pm draw.

Many of those ticket-holders were already dreaming about how they would spend the money, said Darren Christensen, an expert in decision-making and problem gambling.

我们公司也是。同事在skype上给我发信息，我以为是病毒或者发错了，没回复。结果打电话来问我买不买，咱知道自己没那个命，不过凑个热闹呗。
