Perth drivers are so bad at merging and so confused about how to drive through a roundabout that the Office of Road Safety has posted "how to" videos online.

For the first time, the videos - made with WA Police - have been put on YouTube and will soon be included on the office's website.

The 69-second merging video explains that a merging vehicle should give way to the car in front, regardless of whether they are in the right or left-hand lane.

The 95-second roundabout video shows when to indicate and where to position the vehicle when turning left, right or going straight ahead at a roundabout.

A spokeswoman for the office said the issue of merging and roundabouts had prompted a lot of inquiries to the office and to police.

The videos were seen as an appropriate way to inform WA drivers about the correct approach to both issues and were released with relevant fact sheets.

Motor Trades Association of WA chief executive Stephen Moir has labelled WA motorists the worst in the world at merging.

He said they were "too selfish and territorial to merge effectively".

In an Australia-wide survey of motorists late last year for the National Transport Forum - a statutory transport think tank - WA was the only State where motorists identified confusion over the road rules for merging.

Only 44 per cent of respondents said Perth motorists merged well, compared with 59 per cent in Victoria and 58 per cent in NSW.

It came after the SGIO said merging collisions resulted in more than $1 million in insurance claims in 2010.

The highest number of merging collisions were on the Mitchell Freeway (63), the Kwinana Freeway (54), Albany Highway (42), Canning Highway (39), Graham Farmer Freeway (27) and Tonkin Highway (19).

And a survey of RAC members found 70 per cent of respondents identified merging as the driving task that WA motorists were worst at, ahead of keeping a safe distance between vehicles (64 per cent) and using a roundabout (49 per cent).

"One of the reasons our freeways don't flow as well as they should is because we don't know how to merge," RAC head of member advocacy Matt Brown said at the time. "How do we get something so simple so wrong?"
