As advised by you, a domestic dog (reportedly vaccinated against rabies) bit you in China and you have received a rabies vaccine this morning.
As you have not had a course of rabies vaccine in the past, you would be recommended to have a course of 5 rabies vaccines. If you are in Australia on or before Friday 6 July, you would be recommended to also have rabies immunoglobulin – immunoglobulin would not be recommended after 7 days from the date of your first vaccine, which you had today in China.
A further 4 vaccines, over a 4 week period, would also be recommended.
You are advised to seek medical advice upon your arrival in Australia, without delay (you may want to show the doctor this message). Your doctor will contact the Public Health Unit to arrange the vaccines. The vaccines are free of charge to you.
Additionally, as discussed: if the dog is still well 10 days after the bite, you would not need to continue with the vaccine course. If it is possible to find out this information, we urge you to do so.
