儿子上小学6年级
这些是他今天学的新词汇
自认为英文不错的我，居然有大概一半不认识

1 stallion
2 colt
3 heifer
4 doe
5 filly
6 chaste
7 vile
8 tibia
9 bevy
10 oboe
11 cymbal
12 bugle

这些字你都认识吗？

女儿上小学4年级
她算得上是班上比较top的student
英文水平接近她哥哥的水平
我顺便让她也学学这些词汇
她对我大吼一声：
Mom, you are pushing me to the limit!
不过吼归吼
没过几分钟她就把这些字都记住了

今天的词汇(这些都是儿子在做Selective schools / scholarship test学的词汇)：
teal: a type of small, freshwater duck
halibut: a dark brown fish
verdict: the judge's or jury's decision or answer in a law court
joust: a combat in which two knights on horseback attempted to unhorse each other with blunted lances
glum: sullenly or silently gloomy; dejected
bilge: the lowest part of a ship's hold
sable: a weasel-like mammal of cold areas, valued for its dark brown fur
barque: any boat, esp a small sailing vessel
bosun: a warrant officer on a warship or a pretty officer on a merchant vessel
to meet one's maker: to die
to eat humble pie: to act submissively and apologetically, esp in admitting an error
to bite the dust: to fall to the ground, wounded or dead
to turn up one's toes: to die
除了知道最后几个idiom, 上面的字我基本不认识。
纳闷了，不说这儿的小学都是玩为主，不学多少东西的吗？ selective school tests好多题我都不会做啊

等到我儿子认识的字我也全部认识时
就可以这么说了
P.S 经常被孩子们纠正发音，特别是r l ch tr的音

孩子生长在澳洲，为啥要比老外的孩子懂得少啊？

不过这些词都是儿子不认识的，所以才是他的新词汇

比如说像这样的题：

当地中学孩子也不见得都认识这些
孩子认读识字能力差别非常大
家庭背景，自小的阅读量和程度，学校教育的环境，这些全部是影响因素
看来这俩孩子的爸妈以及学校都比较注重学习

我在网上找了一套美国加州的语文教材。和国内语文教材的政治化和泛道德化相比，那些教材确实是从教育的角度出发，没有太多说教，没有太多政治渗透，完全是学习以后生活中所必需的知识和语言能力。里头也有类似楼主的这些词汇。如果那篇课文是关于动物的，然后就搞一堆跟这些有关系的词汇。譬如上面关于马的这些词汇。譬如马和小马，鸭子和小鸭子，鸡和小鸡，等等，很有意思。不过对我们这些刚从大陆过来的，这些词汇都是我们闻所未闻的，不过如果真的刻意想记，也不是就记不住/

英文嘛，我和孩子们一起学习 ------发现自己现在词汇量大增

这几天学到的新词汇，什么tibia,heifer之类的，可以跟N年前背过的GRE词汇有一拚

chaste, vile 比较普通不算太偏，
oboe bugle (ABBA 歌曲　FERNANDO歌詞中有）都是乐器
