Carr supports same-sex marriage

FOREIGN Minister Bob Carr has become the latest Labor MP to declare his support for same-sex marriage.

Senator Carr, who has not made his position on the issue public until now, yesterday told The Age his support for gay marriage was consistent with the work he did as New South Wales premier to remove discrimination against gay and lesbian people from state laws. Senator Carr said that while he respected the views of those who held more conservative opinions on marriage, to him it ''seemed churlish to deny access to marriage to groups that wanted it''.

His statement comes as the Senate begins debating proposals by four Labor senators to legalise gay marriage.

While support for same-sex marriage is stronger in the Senate than in the House of Representatives, campaigners are pessimistic about the bill passing when it goes to a vote later this week.

Nine Greens senators and at least 20 Labor senators are expected to vote for change, but a further nine votes would be needed for the bill to pass. Among those yet to declare their position are Communications Minister Stephen Conroy and independent senator Nick Xenophon.

Coalition senators are bound to vote against change. While the Coalition does not expel members for voting against its position, campaigners say those who support same-sex marriage are being strongly discouraged by the leadership from voting against its position.

Australian Marriage Equality convener Alex Greenwich said if the bill was defeated, it would not be the last vote on the issue.

He said momentum for change was ''unstoppable'' and ''huge progress'' had been made since 2009, when only six senators, all from the Greens, voted for an earlier bill to legalise same-sex marriage.

''Now we are able to see how far we've got with this campaign, and how much more we need to do,'' he said.

Mr Greenwich said in the lead-up to next year's election campaigners would target Liberals in inner city seats - such as Malcolm Turnbull, Josh Frydenberg and Kelly O'Dwyer - to put pressure on the Coalition to allow its members a free vote on the issue.

He said same-sex marriage would be legalised ''state by state and territory by territory''.

Tasmania's lower house has already passed a bill to legalise same-sex marriage, while efforts to make the change are under way in South Australia and the ACT, and the Greens have announced they will introduce gay marriage legislation in the Western Australian Parliament.

But Mr Greenwich called on supporters of gay marriage to work together. There are four separate bills to legalise gay marriage before the Federal Parliament: two sponsored by Greens and two sponsored by Labor MPs.

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who has her own gay marriage bill before the Senate, accused Labor of a ''cynical ploy'' to push the issue off the agenda by putting it up for a vote before there was sufficient support for it to pass. She said she had invited other senators to co-sponsor her bill.

The greatest challenge for democracies is not so much in how well they look after the majority, but in how well they are able to protect the rights and recognise the aspirations of individuals and small minorities.

How about reading this from Men's view? Investment VS Commodity. A good investment returns profit stably in long term. You focus on the profit you gain and believe in your own eye sight and choice.

How do you pick up commodity? Within your capability, pick up the most fashionable, fancy, beautiful one and finally it will be replaced by another more better one in the future. You focus on your own need.

Somehow Christianity gives a traditional view of men and women which sounds familiar with far eastern Asian's. Men and Women are equal but different. Women is created for Men to complete himself by union with him as a family. Men need to take the lead ship in family to raise and protect it. Women need to support his husband.

After Individualism and Feminism, with the economy grows, that tradition kindly doesn't fit women's needs any more. Before we abandon out of date legacy, have we found the solid rock of the new principle?

Brad Pitt Backs Obama: 'Gay Marriage Is Inevitable'

Brad Pitt and his mother clearly have different political views.
In an interview with The Telegraph, the "Moneyball" star lent his support to Barack Obama, noting the president's controversial backing of same-sex marriage.
"I am an Obama supporter and I’m backing his election campaign,” Pitt said at a screening of his forthcoming film "Killing Them Softly" in London. “Gay marriage is inevitable. The next generation, they get it. It is just a matter of time before it becomes a reality.”
The gay-friendly leading man's comments follow those of his conservative mother Jane, who backed Mitt Romney ina controversial letter to Missouri's Springfield News-Leader in July.
"Any Christian who does not vote or writes in a name is casting a vote for Romney’s opponent, Barack Hussein Obama -- a man who sat in Jeremiah Wright’s church for years, did not hold a public ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer, and is a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage," Jane wrote in her letter.
Jane's letter was penned in response to that of another reader, who argued, "Traditional Christians believe in gender equality. They believe Mormon theology denigrates women."
This isn't the first time the 48-year-old Pitt has spoken out in favor of marriage equality. "No state should decide who can marry and who cannot," Brad is quoted byPeople magazine as saying last year. "Thanks to the tireless work of so many, someday soon this discrimination will end and every American will be able to enjoy their equal right to marriage."

GP banned after prescribing gay “cure”

Posted on 10 September 2012

A NSW doctor belonging to the Exclusive Brethren religious sect has been banned from practising as a GP after prescribing chemical castration as a “cure” for homosexuality.
Mark Christopher James Craddock prescribed an 18-year-old man anti-androgen therapy cyproterone acetate (Cyprostat) when he approached Craddock in 2008 seeking a treatment for being gay.
The patient, who cannot be named for legal reasons, complained to the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission earlier this year before it was sent to the Medical Council of NSW.
A council hearing held last month was told the young man came out as gay in 2008 and was told by a Exclusive Brethren leader that “there’s medication you can go on for these things”. The leader then referred him on to Craddock.
The young man, who was visiting Australia at the time from New Zealand on a working holiday, was staying with a member of the Exclusive Brethren Church who helped facilitate the appointment with Craddock and drove him to Craddock’s home.
Craddock then saw the man in his home and prescribed the drug which lowers the libido and is used for treating prostate cancer victims and for sexual deviancy.
The Medical Council found that Craddock did not make a proper physical psychologist nor did he discuss the side effects of the drug, which includes impotence in some cases.
Craddock admitted that it was a mistake to prescribe so much medication with out proper checks prior and said the drug should not have been prescribed.
He was found guilty of unsatisfactory conduct and was restricted to only practicing as a radiologist with restrictions on prescriptions he could write for patients outside that field except in emergency situations.

Marriage equality advocates believe the reform would pass if the Coalition had a conscience vote.

The claim comes as Liberal front-bencher, Malcolm Turnbull, re-iterated his in-principle support for equality but declared it would not pass even if he and other Coalition members were allowed a conscience vote.

Australian Marriage Equality national convener, Alex Greenwich said,

“If there was a Coalition conscience vote, more Coalition MPs would be seeking out the views of their constituents, seriously considering the case for reform, and generally opening their hearts and minds to the need for change”.

“We implore Mr Abbott to abide by Coalition tradition and allow a conscience vote on a reform that has majority support across the Australian community.”

“Rather than breaking a Coalition tradition and forcing his members to vote as a collective, Mr Abbott should allow Liberals to vote according to their own conscience and the views of their electorate” Mr Greenwich said.

Today in Parliament Mr Turnbull said: “Were a free vote to be permitted, I could support legislation that would recognise same-sex couples as married.”

Mr Turnbull went on to say he would support civil unions, despite his own polling showing most people in his electorate oppose them, and despite Tony Abbott ruling them out as an option both at the last election and more recently.

Mr Greenwich said it will be hypocritical of Coalition MPs like Mr Turnbull to be allowed to vote for civil unions and not for marriage equality.

“Either MPs like Malcolm Turnbull are allowed a conscience vote on both marriage equality and civil unions or neither.”

“For Mr Turnbull to be allowed to vote to entrench discrimination through a civil union scheme but prohibited from voting for full equality through an amendment to the Marriage Act is an insult to the majority of Australians who support marriage equality.”

Mr Greenwich said civil unions are a second-class form of recognition which have proven to be ‘a failed experiment‘ in countries like New Zealand and the UK which are now moving towards marriage equality instead.
