Dharawal Nature Reserve is a Schedule 2 Special Area and is jointly managed by both the Sydney Catchment Authority and the National Park and Wildlife Services (NPWS).
Located on the Woronora Plateau, the Dharawal Reserves lie within the southern rim of the Sydney geological basin. This dissected plateau dips gently north-west away from the abrupt edge formed by the Illawarra Escarpment to the Cumberland Plain. It is deeply incised by watercourses draining to the Nepean and Georges River. Altitude varies from 400-449m above sea level in the south-east of the Reserves to 100-149m above sea level in the north-west.
The plateau is dominated by the Triassic Hawkesbury Sandstone Formation composed primarily of quartzose sandstone, with outcrops of shale and ironstone in some areas.
