Our experience with Private insurance (NIB):
1. When you get pregnant, find an OP (moms should know what it means) you like and book him for your whole pregnancy. He will ask for your insurance details. However, some OP may choose to charge you some money out of the pocket, instead of completely from your insurance company. Don't worry too much about that, because you can still claim like 80% of it back from medicare.
2. So during the nine "happy" months, you regularly visit the OP's place, and he will keep track of your history.
3. When it comes to time of delivery, you get into the designated private hospital (booked by your OP), your own OP will deliver your baby.
4. With private hospital, with a little bit of luck, you can have a private room, and the food is generally better than public ones. (Actually I enjoyed most of meals in the hospital even though I don't like western food at all.) Also nappies, face washers, baby oil during the hospitalizing period are free. :-)
Eventually I think we spent like $600 out of our pocket, which is not too bad.
To sum up, private insurance has following advantages:
1. always same OP looking after during the whole pregnancy
2. good change to have a private room during the hospital period.
3. less sitting in the waiting room of public hospital.
4. generally better service, well, you are paying them to do it.
But you do pay much more for the insurance fee, and some of the out-of-pocket charges. |
