http://www.aqua-firma.co.uk/expe ... the_Lofoten_Islands

Lofoten Islands

Itinerary

Day 1
You can arrive at any time after mid-day and board at Lödingen harbour as the vessel will not depart until early the following morning.

Day 2
You will depart from Lødingen and sail to Tysfjord.  You will be able to take an afternoon landing to climb up the hill at Skarvberget . This is a good point for spotting sea eagles. This has also been the best place in Europe to see orcas, but sighting here dropped considerably last season. We will stop for the night in the small harbour of Korsnes, a village at the entrance of the Tysfjord.

Day 3
We will take a morning walk to the Stone Age petroglyph´s at Leiknes. Images of animals such as a Killer Whale and Elk have been carved into the hard rock in the hills here. In the afternoon we will sail to the island of Skrova arriving late afternoon and staying there the night. Skrova is a small, rugged island. Its two hundred inhabitants mainly work in the fishing industry. It is one of the few places in Norway and the world, where whale hunters still hunt for minke whales.

Day 4
We will take a morning walk on Skrova.  An easy walk takes us to a pretty bay on the other side of the island. The more active passengers can climb the 255 m peak of Skrova for a fantastic 360º view. There are good chances of seeing sea eagles during these walks.

In the afternoon we will sail for Kabelvåg. This beautiful old village was the centre for the Lofoten cod fisheries until the beginning of the 20th century.

Day 5
Active members of the team can take a morning walk from Kabelvåg to Svolvær while the vessel will sail around to Svolvær. Sailing enthusiasts should stay on board if the wind is up! In the afternoon we hope to visit to Svolvær, the largest town in the Lofotens. We will stay the night here, so there is a chance to enjoy the famous Svolvær night-life.

Day 6
In the morning we will sail into the Trollfjord, a famous steep sided and stunning fjord a few hours sailing from Svolvær. Afterwards we head for Tranøy, on the Norwegian mainland, where we stay overnight.

Day 7
In the morning we will walk to the pretty lighthouse of Tranøy and admire the works of art that are displayed in this small artist’s village. Tranøy is well known because of the Norwegian writer and Nobel-prize winner, Knut Hamsun.
With a fair wind we will hope to sail to Hustadgaard in Vestbygd where we have the opportunity to see the “Øye I Stein”, “Eye in Stone”, a sculpture weighing 37 tonnes made by the Indian artist Anish Kapoor.

We will then make way back to Lødingen arriving  late in the evening and staying there overnight.

Day 8
Disembarkation is after breakfast in the morning.

Excluded:
Airfares. Pre and post land arrangements. Transfers to and from the vessel. Cancellation and personal insurance. Passports and visas. Arrival and departure tax. Meals ashore. Baggage. Items of a personal nature (alcohol, laundry etc). Tips

Arctic Wildlife, Marine Life and Photography Expedition

We are proud to offer this dedicated wildlife photography & diving voyage which, like our Antarctic Peninsular Diving & Photography Voyage, is a unique opportunity for photographers, natural history enthusiasts and experienced drysuit divers alike to gain insights into the polar environment both above and below the ice.

This small group exploratory voyage is led by an expert team which includes National Geographic & Discovery Channel photographers & cinematographers, BBC Wildlife Photographers of the Year, overall and category winners.

Photography
Whether your interest is in film and photography beneath the ice or above, expert guidance onboard can help you make the most of your time in the Arctic. This will include evening lectures and workshops on photography and opportunities throughout the voyage to talk with our onboard experts and other passengers who are passionate about natural history and wilderness landscapes.

Diving
For the experienced drysuit diver, the submarine ecosystems of the far north present a wild and undiscovered realm. This is an ever changing world of blue sculpted ice, Arctic marine life and the chance to dive where few have dived before. The combination of sunlight, sea water and the often extraordinary formations of ice cause an overwhelming, ever-changing spectre of underwater colours, with a fantastic variety of shades and brilliance. We may observe typical marine life such as sea squirts, squat lobsters, many, species of star fish, spider crabs, soft corals, anemones, peacock worms and dogfish.

Diving in the Arctic environment means not only ice but huge kelp forests and kelp walls, with sea snails, crabs, sea butterflies, a variety of Arctic fish, shrubby horse-tails, jelly-fish and sea hedgehogs.  In Spitsbergen we may dive with seals. This expedition does not involve cutting holes in the ice to dive.  Dives are conducted from the expedition vessel's compliment of zodiacs, whilst others are from the shore or from ice shells.  This will vary from shallow ice diving near or under the ice-floes (approx. 30 feet) to shore diving, whereby we dive to approximately 30 to 60 feet.

Ushuaia
智利的Punta Arenas
Bluff

You can travel to Antarctica with us by cruise ship from Argentina or Chile, or by icebreaker from Australia or New Zealand. Travelers with less time can fly by jet over Antarctica from Australia for a full day of aerial sightseeing.

If you're on of those adventurous types, you can try Antarctic scuba diving, kayaking, mountain climbing, or South Pole trekking adventure. If you tour Antarctica and its neighboring chains of islands by ship, the whale, seal, and sea bird watching opportunities -- especially the observation of Emperor and King Penguin rookeries -- are first rate. You can even take a special cruise just for birdwatchers.

Note the size of the tourist boat in relation to the icebergs!

You can fly over Antarctica with Qantas - details here.  There are only ten flights (aboard a Qantas 747) that depart Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide between October and February.

While you're at this site, click on the Photo gallery link for some spectacular scenery.

Lots of information on what to take, what you'll see etc here.

Did you know that the average thickness of the Antarctic ice is 2,000 m (6,500 feet), and the greatest measured thickness is more than 4,770 m (15,650 feet)? (Bramwell, Martyn. Glaciers and Icecaps. Belgium: Franklin Watts, 1986)

That's a lot of ice... then add the katabatic winds that rage on the coastal regions and the whole place is just mind-blowing (pardon the pun!)

These winds, "are caused by a combination of the cold of the interior, the domed shape of the continent and intense low pressure systems around the coast. For long periods - often many days - large amounts of dense, cold air slide at an accelerating rate down the coastal slopes of Antarctica's ice sheet, reaching hurricane force (around 120 km/h) by the time they reach the sea. Maximum gusts can be more than 250 km/h."

If you ever complain about it being windy where you are, spare a thought for the Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911 to 1914. "At the Cape Denison headquarters, the average year-round wind speed was nearly 80 km/h, and in June and July the average speed was 120 km/h."
As well as being the windiest, Antarctica is also the coldest place on Earth; "the lowest temperatures recorded in nature have been at the Russian Vostok base, when on 21 July 1983, the temperature dropped to minus 89.2 degrees C (-128.6 F). In 1998 the Vostok temperature was reported to have dropped below minus 90 degrees C (this is yet to be confirmed)."

So take your woolly vest!

If you want to see what it's like before you go, here's the webcam at Casey Base.  When I just visited, the temperature was a balmy  -1.1 degrees C, and wind speed was 5 knots or 9 km/hr. Hey - it's summer!
