Camry is actually a middle sized car. Toyota just makes it a little bit larger and looks like a large car.
As for the fuel consumption, if you drive more highway than city, it is almost the same between a camry 2.4 and commodore/falcon. As for camry 3.0, no difference at all.
Toyota is said to have a better build quality but the mechanic package is far less valuable than a large, real drive platform and six cyclinder commodore and falcon.
